Chosen from Above the Seven Heavens
Zaynab bint Jahsh (RA)
Reading time: 2 minutes
I have never seen a woman more righteous, more fearful of Allah, more truthful in speech, more caring for her relatives, and more generous in charity.
Zaynab bint Jahsh (RA) holds a unique and honored place among the Mothers of the Believers, celebrated not just for her piety and generosity but for the extraordinary distinction of having her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ decreed by Allah Himself.
Imagine the moment when the Prophet ﷺ expressed his desire to marry her.
Despite the immense honor, Zaynab (RA) didn't immediately accept.
She replied, "I will not respond until I seek Allah's guidance."
Even with the Prophet ﷺ proposing, she felt the need to turn to Allah first.
She stood in her prayer area to perform Istikhara, seeking divine counsel for this life-changing decision.
While she was still in prayer, the Prophet ﷺ received revelation about her.
Before she even finished her supplication, the matter was settled by the Highest Authority.
There was no need for a formal contract, witnesses, or even a mahr (bridal gift).
Zaynab (RA) became the only person in history to have her marriage conducted by the Divine.
Known as Sawwamah Qawwamah—one who fasts and stands in prayer frequently—Zaynab's (RA) devotion was evident in every aspect of her life.
Caliph Umar (RA) granted the Prophet’s wives an annual stipend of 12,000 dirhams—a considerable fortune, equivalent to 50,000 dollars today.
As the wealth was placed before her, she exclaimed, "There is no power nor strength except through Allah," almost apprehensive about the money.
Without hesitation, she began distributing the sum to those in need.
She directed her servant to take portions to various households and didn't rest until every coin was given away.
Umar (RA), impressed by her generosity, sent her an additional 1,000 dirhams.
She gave that away, too, praying, "O Allah, let me not see this money again next year, for wealth is a trial."
Indeed, she never received it again, as she passed away before the following year.
The Prophet ﷺ had once told his wives, "The one among you with the longest hand will be the first to join me after my death."
Curious, the wives would occasionally line up and compare their hands, measuring to see whose was longest.
It wasn't until Zaynab (RA), the first to pass away, that they understood the true meaning of his words—the "longest hand" symbolized her unparalleled generosity.
Zaynab's (RA) relationship with Aisha (RA) is a beautiful example of integrity and sisterhood.
Despite moments of rivalry due to their closeness to the Prophet ﷺ, Zaynab's (RA) character shone during times of trial.
During the difficult period of the slander against Aisha (RA), the Prophet ﷺ asked Zaynab (RA) about her.
She responded, "O Messenger of Allah, I will not let my eyes and ears lead me to sin. By Allah, I know nothing but good of Aisha."
Despite any personal feelings, she refused to speak ill of her.
Known affectionately as "the Mother of the Orphans" and "the Mother of the Poor," Zaynab's (RA) home was a refuge for the needy.
Her life was a continuous cycle of worship, charity, and service.
May her example inspire us to deepen our faith, to give generously, and always to seek Allah's guidance in all matters.
May Allah be pleased with her and grant us the ability to follow in her noble footsteps.
