Belief in the Unseen
A Faith that Transcends Sight
Reading time: 2 minutes
If the veils were removed, my certainty would not increase.
One of the core qualities of the believer is the ability to believe in the Unseen.
This belief is not just an abstract idea but a defining characteristic of a heart attuned to divine truth.
Unlike those who need visible proof, believers trust without immediate evidence, embracing a faith that doesn’t rest on physical sight but on deep, inner conviction.
In our world, it’s common to hear people say, “I need to see it to believe it.”
But true faith—iman—requires the opposite.
It’s a trust that goes beyond visible signs, rooted in what scholars call “the knowledge of certainty.”
Believers don’t need to see Paradise, Hellfire, or even the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to believe in them.
Instead, they’re moved by a conviction that what Allah and His Messenger have conveyed is true, even before their eyes have witnessed it.
This kind of faith shapes a believer's life, guiding them to act for what lies beyond this world, for what is unseen.
In contrast, those without this belief are often preoccupied with the material and the immediate.
Their lives are built on what can be touched, seen, or acquired in this world, chasing temporary gains and fleeting satisfactions.
They become trapped in a cycle of worldly ambition, focused on status, wealth, or power.
But this shallow pursuit often leaves them hollow.
It’s a life of surfaces where they miss the depths of purpose and tranquility that come from living with faith.
Faith, however, is about about transformation.
True iman requires us to believe in what we cannot see and to act for it.
This is especially true for those of us who didn’t get to experience the physical presence of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Companions saw his truth directly, witnessed his kindness, wisdom, and integrity, and felt his presence.
For them, belief was grounded in sight; they could see him, hear him, and experience his mercy firsthand.
But for us, he belongs to the Unseen, requiring us to engage on a different level.
As one of the early scholars wisely said, “No one will acquire a stronger level of faith than those believing in the Unseen.”
Our belief in the Prophet ﷺ, in his message and his way, now rests on our conviction and our intellect, yes—but more so on the heart.
We must immerse ourselves in his teachings, reflect deeply on his Sunnah, and strive to live by his example.
When we do, something extraordinary happens:
Though he remains in the unseen realm, a new level of perception and understanding opens within us.
We begin to experience the reality of his guidance, the depth of his character, and the presence of his spirit in a way beyond physical sight.
This gift is a certainty that becomes more than just knowledge; it settles so deeply within us that it becomes a part of who we are.
It inspires us to act, to embody the qualities we admire in the Prophet ﷺ, and to carry his light into our lives and the lives of others.
Reflection:
Would I approach my daily actions differently if I fully trusted in the reality of the Unseen?
