Actions & Intentions
Reading time: 1 minute
Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated.
Umar ibn al-Khattab, known as Al-Farooq for his ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood, played a crucial role in the early days of Islam. His leadership was marked by significant reforms and the establishment of systems that have shaped the Islamic world for centuries.
One of his notable contributions was introducing a registration system, documenting vital information such as financial transactions and official correspondences. He also initiated the Islamic calendar, starting from the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to Medina, a system that continues to be used today.
Umar's physical and moral strength was renowned, yet he was counseled to embrace gentleness and kindness, particularly towards the oppressed.
Despite his hesitance, Umar's selflessness and lack of desire for power led to his selection as caliph, exemplifying the importance of humility and selflessness in leadership.
The essence of our actions lies not merely in their execution but in the intentions behind them.
Our deeds must be driven by a sincere desire to please Allah.
Whether it's acts of worship, helping others, or pursuing personal goals, the purity of our intentions is what determines the sincerity and value of our actions.
Umar ibn al-Khattab's story is a powerful reminder of the significance of aligning our actions with pure intentions for Allah's pleasure.
His leadership exemplifies humility, selflessness, and the pursuit of community betterment over personal gain.
Let us reflect on our intentions and strive to embody these virtues in our deeds, following the exemplary character of Umar ibn al-Khattab.
May Allah guide us always to have pure intentions and may He accept our actions. Ameen.
PS: This Ramadan, we are partnering with Islamic Ummah Relief to build an orphanage in Ghana. Insha’allah, make an intention, take action, and contribute to support an entire community for generations to come. See below for more details.
Whoever looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise with me like this," putting his index and middle fingers together.
Countless underprivileged orphans face a life of despair, lacking the basic necessities of shelter, food, and care. We aim to raise $5,000 to transform their lives by providing shelter, mosque, food, education, healthcare, and clothing. Join us in this noble cause and extend a helping hand to these innocent children who desperately need our support. Together, we can make a difference in their lives.
