When You Put Allah First

Stories of Trust, Faith, and Success

Reading time: 2 minutes

If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds:

They go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening

A brother shared this incredible story, which is a great reminder about putting your trust in Allah.

It starts with him in the middle of a forensic science course at the University of Toronto.

His professor, Professor Melby, was a well-known, no-nonsense guy who was head of the department.

Anyway, the brother was in Forensics 239, and they had an exam on forensic psychology coming up.

Here’s the thing: the exam was scheduled for 1 PM—right during Jumu'ah.

The problem was that he had been asked to lead the prayer at a masjid at least a 20-minute drive away.

You can already see the dilemma, right?

He tried explaining the situation to the brothers at the masjid, telling them about his exam, but they were desperate.

“Brother, we really need you to lead. There’s no one else.”

What could he do?

So, he decided to give it a shot with his professor.

He went to Professor Melby’s office and explained, “Professor, the exam starts at 1, but I’m leading prayer at a mosque about 30 minutes away.

Could I take the exam earlier, say around 12?

I’ll be done before the next set of students even arrive.”

But the professor wasn’t having it.

He looked at him and said, “We’re not here to accommodate your schedule. Either you’re there at one, or you’re not.

Whatever time you have left when you arrive is all you get.

No extensions.”

Our brother wasn’t about to skip Jumu'ah, though.

So, he chose to go lead the prayer.

After finishing the khutbah, he rushed out, throwing quick salams as he sprinted to his car.

He got in, sped back to the university, double-parked, and ran into the exam room.

By the time he sat down, it was 1:40.

There were only ten minutes left for this 50-minute exam.

Professor Melby gave him one of those “good luck with that” smirks.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting.

The exam was multiple-choice.

He opened it up, started reading, and saw the first answer: C.

The second question? Also C.

Third? C again.

The same thing happened with the fourth and the fifth questions.

Usually, this is when we would start to second-guess ourselves, but with barely any time left, he decided to just go with it—and put C for the rest.

All 80 questions.

Two weeks later, after the break, the brother returned to class, and Professor Melby walked in and stared directly at him, clearly irritated.

He addressed the class, saying, “We tried something different this year.

As part of the test’s forensic psychology component, we did a psychological experiment to see how students would handle it.

We made all the answers ‘C’ to see if they’d doubt themselves after seeing so many in a row.”

But since the brother hadn’t read most of the questions and filled in ‘C’ for everything, he had a perfect score.

At the end of it all, the professor, clearly frustrated, said, "We won’t be doing this again—because, well, certain things caused statistical irregularities.”

The brother couldn’t help but chuckle and think

“That’s Allah, brother. You can keep your statistics!”

This story is a beautiful reminder of how the brother did everything he could to ensure his success, but ultimately, he chose to put Allah first.

And Allah, in His infinite power, made the impossible possible.

When you prioritize Allah, He takes care of the rest in ways you’d never expect.
