What are we doing here?

What's my purpose?

Why am I here?

We often ask ourselves these questions, but the ultimate purpose, as provided by Allah in the Quran, is clear.

We serve many roles in life as doctors, teachers, lawyers, mothers, fathers, and so on.

But these are all lesser purposes.

The ultimate purpose of our existence is to worship Allah, to put Him at the center of our existence, our hearts, and our lives.

This is what makes a Muslim.

We live in a society that worships many other things.

Money, status, and power.

We are constantly told to worship these things, but our ultimate purpose is to realize that we were created to know, love, and worship Allah.

The world is like an ocean.

And our hearts are like a boat.

The moment we allow the water to enter the boat, the boat sinks.

If we allow water (materialism) to enter our hearts and take over, it breaks and can consume us. The problem is not having things in the Dunya, but when these things take over our hearts, they can drown us.

As Muslims, we must strive to have the right relationship with Dunya. We should have money, power, and status, but we must not worship these things.

We must not let them take over our hearts.

Detachment is not that you do not own anything but that nothing owns you.

We can have money in our hands, not in our hearts.

Allah provides a powerful analogy of what this life is in Surat al-Hadid.

He tells us that life in this world is like a play.

An amusement.

A show of beauty.

An exchange of boastful claims between you and a competition of increase in riches and children.

As we navigate through life, let's remember to give our children and ourselves the tools to master the Dunya and to always keep our ultimate purpose in mind:

To worship Allah.
