Three Fingers at a Time

The Sunnah Of Mindful Eating

Reading time: 2 min

The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach.

In its simplicity, the Sunnah unveils beauty in the most unassuming practices. One such Sunnah, often known but less followed, is our approach to eating.

Ka'b bin Malik (RA) narrated: "I observed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eating using three fingers - the thumb, the forefinger, and the middle finger - and he would lick them after finishing his meal."

This practice of eating with three fingers aligns with the Sunnah and promotes mindful consumption, elevating our relationship with food. Here are the immediate benefits from this practice:

  1. Savoring Each Bite: Eating with three fingers naturally results in smaller bites, allowing us to truly enjoy our food and the blessings that come with it.

  2. Promoting Satiety: A slower eating pace gives our brain the necessary time to recognize when we're full, reducing the chance of overeating, a direct cause of many health issues.

  3. Enhanced Digestion: Thoroughly chewing our food, made easier by taking smaller bites, ensures better digestion and nutrient absorption.

  4. Mind-Body Connection: Being present during meals helps us better understand our body's signals. It deepens our awareness of how foods impact us.

  5. Gratitude: Adopting mindfulness when eating creates a sense of gratitude, making us reflect on Allah's countless blessings and our food journey before reaching us.
