The Two Treasures
Stay Calm and Make Better Decisions
Reading time: 2 minutes
Patience is the virtue that makes all other virtues possible.
Reacting without thinking. Speaking without considering. Making decisions you later regret.
We’ve all been there—caught in the cycle of hurried responses and emotional reactions.
But what if you could break free from this impulsivity?
What if you could cultivate qualities that not only protect you but elevate you?
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) described two extraordinary treasures: patience (sabr) and wisdom (hikma).
These aren’t just virtues to admire; they are transformative tools that can reshape how we live, respond, and grow.
The Treasure of Patience
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No one is given a blessing better and more comprehensive than patience."
Why?
Because patience is expansive—it extends into every part of our lives, refining our character and giving us strength.
Patience helps us to:
Control Desires: It strengthens our ability to resist temptations that can derail our spiritual journey.
Endure Tribulations: It equips us to bear life’s hardships with grace, trusting that ease will follow difficulty.
Commit to Good Deeds: It empowers us to stay consistent in worship and good actions, even when results aren’t immediate.
Patience offers us perspective, allowing us to see beyond the discomfort of the present moment. It reminds us that growth and success often require enduring seasons of struggle.
The Treasure of Wisdom
The Prophet (ﷺ) also taught, "Wisdom is the lost treasure of the believer. Whoever finds it has the greatest right to it."
Wisdom, like patience, transforms how we perceive and interact with the world.
Wisdom enables us to:
Pause Before Judging: It prevents us from rushing to conclusions or reacting prematurely to situations we don’t fully understand.
See the Bigger Picture: It allows us to step back and consider the long-term impact of our decisions.
Respond Thoughtfully: It transforms impulsive reactions into deliberate actions aligned with our values and faith.
How These Treasures Work Together
Patience and wisdom are deeply interconnected.
Patience shields us from acting impulsively while wisdom, in turn, helps us think critically, act intentionally, and make sound decisions.
These treasures lay the foundation for spiritual growth, emotional resilience, and meaningful action.
A Call to Action
In a world that urges us to act quickly, speak impulsively, and chase instant gratification, patience, and wisdom are rare but invaluable treasures. The good news is they are available to anyone who seeks them sincerely.
Let patience and wisdom be your compass—enduring qualities that guide you to live with purpose, peace, and faith.
May Allah bless us all with the strength to embody these treasures and the clarity to use them to enrich our lives and the lives of those around us.
