We often proclaim "I love you" to spouses, friends, positions, or even possessions.

Yet beneath these words often lies a hidden truth: what we frequently mean is "I love me."

We love what others provide us, how they make us feel, or what advantages they bring to our lives.

This conditional love remains tethered to the self, always asking, "What is in it for me?"

This self-centered love reveals itself when circumstances change.

When a spouse or friend no longer provides what we desire, our "love" may quickly evaporate.

Proving it was never truly love for the other but instead attachment to what we received.

As one spiritual teacher noted, "Most relationships are not about loving the other person but about loving yourself through them."

From "I" to "You"

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offered guidance for this transformation when he said we should "Worship Allah as if you are witnessing Him."

This teaching contains the essence of moving from self-absorption to selflessness.

True worship isn't about witnessing ourselves worshipping.

Which can be a subtle form of spiritual narcissism, but rather about witnessing only the Divine.

When we remain fixated on our worship, thinking "Look how beautifully I pray" or "See how generous I am," we've missed the point entirely.

We're merely worshipping ourselves.

The Prophet's wisdom directs us to dissolve the "I" until only awareness of the Divine remains.

Consider the beautiful story of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who disliked squash until he saw the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ eating it with relish.

From that moment, Umar forgot his personal preference and simply loved what the Prophet loved.

His "I" dissolved.

Similarly, a companion once traveled to "fill his gaze" with the sight of the Prophet ﷺ.

In that pure intention, we find no self-interest, only the desire to behold the beloved.

This exemplifies the journey from "I love" to "you," where the beloved becomes everything and the self fades from view.

The deepest peace emerges when we no longer fixate on our actions or their results but see only the Divine hand guiding all affairs.

This perspective renders us remarkably resilient to life's inevitable fluctuations.

When disappointment comes, we recognize it as coming from the Beloved.

When joy arrives, we see it as a gift from the same Source.

This transition from self-centeredness to God-centeredness forms the foundation of genuine worship.

Remember, without love, our religious practices become empty rituals.

We might enter the mosque while leaving our hearts "at the shoe racks.”

Remove love from worship, and you have no worship at all.

Remove love from faith, and you have no faith.

The heart must be present for our practices to transcend ritual and become relationship.

This selfless love is the cornerstone of spiritual development, transforming ordinary actions into a sacred connection.

When we finally arrive at "You" without the interference of "I," we discover what it means to truly love, not for what we receive, but simply for the joy of beholding and serving the beloved.

Then you truly love Allah and love others through this love.

This is the love that sustains marriages through hardship, friendships through disagreement, and the spiritual seeker through the desert of the soul.

👶 SunnahStories:

The Hound And The Hunter

📖 The Hound and the Huntsman

Through forests deep and hills so wide,

A huntsman walked with hound in stride.

A dog once swift, with senses keen,

The finest hunter ever seen.

One morning bright, with golden light,

A deer ran fast—a speeding sight!

The huntsman aimed, his arrow flew,

But only grazed, the deer still flew.

"Go, Zahir! Chase with all your might!"

The hound took off in speedy flight.

His heart was strong, his will was high,

But youth had left—his strength ran dry.

He caught the deer, his jaws were near,

But grip was weak—the prey ran clear.

He walked back slow, with tired pace,

His eyes still bright, his heart in place.

"Oh Zahir, once so fierce and bold,"

"Why did you fail? Are you too old?"

The hound then bowed, with voice so low,

"I did my best—that much you know."

"My heart remains, my soul stays true,"

"But time has made my strength feel new."

"For effort shows what hearts contain,"

"And loyalty shall still remain."

The huntsman smiled, his heart was light,

For effort shines with true delight.

Not all who win are those who try,

But deeds with love shall never die.
