When Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) finally joined the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah, he was just a young teen.
Everything around him felt like stepping into a world he had only heard about in Mecca.
Among the many sights and companions he saw, one man stood out.
In the streets of Madinah walked a man with such a distinguished presence that people stood in awe.
Though Persian among Arabs, two cultures with historical animosity, this man commanded extraordinary respect amongst all in the community.
Young Abdullah (RA) was captivated, wondering about this Persian whom others deferred to and who was a frequent guest at the Prophet's ﷺ home.
Abdullah (RA) would one day sit beside him, a man over five decades older than him, and ask,
“How did you end up here?“
“What is your story?”
This man was Salman Al-Farsi (RA), whose remarkable journey from Persian nobility to beloved companion is preserved thanks to Abdullah’s (RA) curiosity.
Salman (RA) grew up in the Persian Empire, where Zoroastrianism was the dominant religion, characterized by fire worship.
Just as Romans were associated with Christianity, Persians were synonymous with Zoroastrianism.
These two empires had waged war against each other for over 700 years, their religious identities inseparable from their imperial ambitions.
Salman's (RA) father was the high priest in Asbahan (modern-day Iran), ranking just beneath the emperor in power and influence.
In their grand home stood the sacred fire that, according to Zoroastrian belief, must never be extinguished.
As the son of the High Priest, Salman (RA) lived a life of luxury.
His father loved him deeply but confined him "like a slave," never permitting him to leave.
Growing up tending to the sacred flame in their home, Salman (RA) received extensive education in Zoroastrian philosophy, practices, and scriptures, and he was well-versed in the religion by the time he was a teen.
One day, his father, occupied with managing his many properties, asked Salman (RA) to tend to one of the gardens.
Having never left home, Salman (RA) got lost on his way and happened upon a church.
The sound of scripture being recited drew him inside, where he witnessed something that shook his religious foundations:
Christians in prayer, bowing and prostrating.
What Salman (RA) encountered was a Persian form of Christianity largely untouched by Roman influence.
Unlike modern-day Christianity, which was formalized by an elitist council, these Persian Christians preserved many original practices of early Christianity, including prostration in prayer.
Isolated from Roman authority, their worship remained closest to the earliest Christian teachings.
Sitting there lost in the beauty and mesmerized for hours, Salman (RA) had an epiphany: "This religion is better than ours."
By the time Salman (RA) returned home, his father had already launched a frantic search throughout the city.
Upon finding his son, he embraced him with relief, bombarding him with questions.
When Salman (RA) explained his experience at the church and his newfound conviction, his father reacted with fury rather than reason.
Instead of engaging his son's doubts with logic, he chained Salman's (RA) hands and feet, imprisoning him in their home.
The once-respected heir to the high priesthood was now disgraced before the community.
Yet this humiliation only strengthened Salman's (RA) determination to find the truth.
Even in chains, he managed to send a message to the Christians, setting in motion the next chapter of his extraordinary journey toward Islam.

Upon the hills where breezes blew,
A young goat wandered, fresh and new.
He munched on grass, so soft and bright,
Unaware of lurking fright.
For in the trees, with hungry eyes,
A wolf stood still, prepared with lies.
"Oh, little goat, so young, so free—"
"Shall we dance beneath this tree?"
The goat stood tall, his mind was wise,
For danger lurked in kind disguise.
"A dance sounds fun! But first, a song—"
"For music makes the heart grow strong!"
The wolf then frowned, his plan now weak,
"I do not sing, I do not speak!"
"Ah," said the goat, "then howl with glee—"
"The shepherd’s dogs will play for me!"
The wolf’s eyes widened—what a fright!
He turned and ran with all his might.
The goat then laughed and trotted wide,
Back to his herd with peace inside.
For wisdom shines in danger’s call,
And clever minds will never fall.
