Bismillah. This is DailySunnah.

Yesterday, we left off as Salman (RA) was sold into slavery and at long last, he was blessed to meet the Prophet ﷺ, whom he had spent a lifetime seeking.

Moved by his story, the Prophet ﷺ mobilized the entire community to help free him.

After decades of searching and hardship, Salman (RA) finally found himself in Medina alongside the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

What made Salman (RA) truly unique was his unparalleled scholarly background.

He was known as Abu al-Kitabayn, "the father of the two books."

Perhaps the only person in the world who was a scholar of the Bible, the Quran, and the Zoroastrian scriptures, he spoke Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, and Aramaic fluently.

His deep knowledge of all these sacred texts and their arguments gave him a unique position among the Companions.

This remarkable breadth of knowledge would later make him the first person to translate portions of the Quran into Persian on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ.

When Salman (RA) walked through Medina, there was a distinct aura surrounding him.

His quiet strength and persistence commanded deep respect.

Having missed the Battle of Badr, Salman (RA) eagerly anticipated his first battle alongside the Prophet ﷺ.

As fate would have it, this opportunity came soon during the most difficult moment the Muslim community had yet faced, the Battle of Khandaq (the Trench).

The largest army the Arabs had ever assembled was gathering around Medina, intent on wiping out the Muslims completely.

The Confederate forces, estimated between 12,000 and 15,000 strong, had decided to march on and surround the city from every direction.

Against them stood only 3,000 Muslims at most, ill-equipped and facing a harsh winter with limited resources.

The situation appeared dire.

The Prophet ﷺ gathered his Companions, asking for their counsel:

"What should we do?

Should we fight inside the city, hiding within our homes?

Or should we engage them outside the city as we did at Uhud, keeping the women and children protected inside?"

As the debate continued, Salman (RA) spoke up: "I have an idea."

All eyes turned to him as he explained:

"In Persia, when the Romans would gather against us, we would build a trench. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Medina is situated perfectly between two lava fields. The enemy cannot bring their horses over those fields. If we dig a trench connecting the two ‘harras’, with the natural vegetation protecting the remaining side, we will be covered from all four directions. The trench will slow their advance, and we will only need to defend that single front."

The Prophet's ﷺ face lit up with pleasure at Salman's (RA) suggestion.

Suddenly seeing The Prophet's ﷺ smile, the tension broke as a lighthearted commotion erupted among the Companions.

The Ansar rushed forward, pulling at Salman's (RA) sleeve: "He's clearly one of us! Look at his practical wisdom!"

The Muhajirin crowded around from the other side: "No, no, his journey mirrors ours! He's a migrant like us!"

The Ansar and Muhajirin began trying to claim Salman (RA) as their own.

In the midst of this cheerful claiming and counter-claiming, the Prophet ﷺ raised his hand.

The playful dispute fell silent.

With a smile that carried deep affection and divine authority, he declared:

"No. Salman is mine. He is from the people of my household."

The words hung in the air.

Salman (RA), who had been watching the good-natured dispute with confusion, suddenly felt tears in his eyes.

From being chained in his father's home, to being sold as a slave from master to master, to finally standing here where the Prophet of Allah was now claiming him, not just as a follower, but as family.

When considering the timing, the divine orchestration of Salman's (RA) arrival in Medina becomes even more beautiful.

Allah had delivered Salman (RA) to the Prophet ﷺ just before this critical battle.

The Prophet ﷺ had sacrificed what could have purchased dozens of slaves, an entire orchard plus forty ounces of gold, without hesitation, to free this one man.

And now, that very same person became the saving grace of the entire Muslim community.

The synchronicity reveals the beauty of Allah's divine plan and the Prophet's ﷺ love.

Salman (RA), the perpetual seeker of truth, had not only found what he was looking for but had become an instrument of divine protection for the very community he had sacrificed everything to join.

His journey from fire-worship to faith, privilege to persecution, slavery to salvation, stands as one of the most remarkable testaments to sincerity and determination in the pursuit of truth.

There are many lessons to be taken from this journey.

When confronted with the enormous price for Salman's (RA) freedom, we see the Prophet ﷺ acted purely from the kindness of his heart.

He ﷺ also mobilized the entire community, which shows us the value of solidarity and our ummah to help this man who had no status, no tribal lineage, no wealth, nothing to offer in return but his sincerity.

When we invest in people based on their character rather than their worldly credentials, Allah often brings unexpected blessings through them that far exceed our initial investment.

In Salman Al-Farisi (RA), we see how Allah guides those who sincerely seek Him, no matter how winding or difficult the path may be.

We learn that knowledge, perseverance, and faith can transcend cultural, linguistic, and social barriers, indeed, all barriers that separate humanity.

The once-sheltered teen who couldn’t find his way to his father’s garden would go on to cross deserts and empires, enduring unimaginable trials, all to reach Madinah and the Prophet ﷺ.

Perhaps the most important lesson from Salman's (RA) life is how Allah weaves purpose through our hardships.

During those years of imprisonment, enslavement, and arduous travel, Salman (RA) could not have known that a military strategy he learned in Persia would one day save the Prophet ﷺ and the entire Muslim community.

The geographical details his Christian teacher in Damascus taught him about Medina seemed like mere clues to find the Prophet ﷺ, but they later became crucial tactical knowledge.

Many times in our own lives, we endure difficulties without understanding the wisdom behind them.

We accumulate experiences, skills, and insights that seem disconnected or even pointless in the moment.

But Allah's plan unfolds perfectly in time.

Just as Salman's (RA) diverse experiences converged to benefit the Ummah at its most critical hour, our trials and tribulations prepare us for moments when what we've learned will be profoundly beneficial.

Perhaps to ourselves, perhaps to others, or perhaps to an entire community.

The wisdom, though hidden now, will reveal itself when most needed

We know the last two articles have been a bit longer than usual, but with a journey as rich as Salman al-Farsi’s (RA), it was hard to leave anything out.

If you’ve been enjoying this multi-part series, let us know!

InshaAllah, we’d love to continue exploring more deep dives like this in future editions.

👶 SunnahStories

Three birds lived upon a farm,

With feathered coats and different charm.

One had strength, one beauty bright,

And one found joy in simple light.

The peacock spread his tail so wide,

"Behold my beauty, full of pride!"

"No bird compares, none shine like me—"

"My feathers glow for all to see!"

The turkey scoffed, his wings spread tall,

"What good is beauty, after all?"

"I have strength—both fierce and grand!"

"With power strong, I rule this land!"

But Ghazal, wise, just shook her head,

"Why not thank Allah instead?"

"Each gift is rare, yet none shall stay—"

"For storms will come and take away."

And so it rained, the skies turned grey,

The peacock’s shine was washed away.

His wings grew heavy, colors dim,

His beauty lost, no glow, no hymn.

The turkey stood and laughed aloud,

"Your beauty’s gone, your head’s unbowed!"

But as he spoke, the winds blew high,

And tumbled him into the sky!

Into the mud he fell so deep,

No strength to stand, no ground to keep.

But through the storm, with steady grace,

The goose still swam in peaceful place.

"Oh Ghazal, help! We’re weak and lost!"

They cried aloud, they felt the cost.

She led them safe, through rain and cold,

And spoke with words so wise and bold.

"Your strength and looks may rise and fall,

But gratitude outshines them all."

"A thankful heart will always shine—"

"For Allah gives, and all is fine."
