The Qur'an possesses extraordinary power, described in its own verses as something that would flatten a mountain out of awe for Allah if revealed upon it.

Yet Allah made the heart of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ capable of receiving this divine revelation in its entirety and our hearts able to hold it.

For believers, the Qur'an has the potential to become the spring of our hearts and the light in our chests, as the Prophet ﷺ beautifully expressed.

However, this same Book carries a warning. The Prophet ﷺ described the person without Qur'an in their heart as a ruined, desolate home.

Sounds like depression in a nutshell.

The contrast couldn't be more stark: the Qur'an fills us with light and life, or its absence leaves us spiritually decimated.

When the Qur'an Becomes Your Grave Companion

What we fill our minds with matters for our earthly existence and what awaits beyond.

While many of us allow our thoughts to be consumed by daily routines, work pressures, social media scrolling, or unnecessary information, we might be inadvertently pushing away our greatest ally for the afterlife.

Let me tell you about the most loyal friend you'll ever have , one who sticks around even after your family has tearfully left your graveside.

According to a powerful narration from Ubadah ibn al-Samit, something extraordinary happens when a lover of the Qur'an reaches their deathbed.

The Qur'an stands by their head during washing, then enters between their chest and shroud.

When they're placed in their grave, and the questioning angels Munkar and Nakir approach, the Qur'an positions itself as a shield between you.

When the angels say, "Step aside so we may question him,"

The Qur'an responds: "By Allah, I will never leave him."

Then, turning to the believer, it asks tenderly, "Do you recognize me?"

After the believer fails to recognize it (understandable given recent events), the Qur'an reveals itself: "I am your companion, the Qur'an, that kept you awake at night and made you thirsty during the day... you will find me today as a loyal companion."

The Qur'an then becomes the believer's advocate, requesting comfort from Paradise.

A mattress, covering, and lamp from Paradise are brought down by a thousand angels, along with fragrant plants.

The grave expands, and the Qur'an remains with you for the remainder of your time.

What we invest in consistently becomes integrated into our identity and supports us in times of crisis.

When internalized through regular recitation and contemplation, the Qur'an becomes not just knowledge but a living part of one's being that provides comfort even in the darkest, loneliest moments.

The protective power extends to the Day of Judgment, when the Qur'an will again meet its companion as they emerge from the grave.

It will once more ask, "Do you recognize me?" before affirming, "I am your companion, the Qur'an... every merchant shall benefit from his trade, and today, you'll benefit from all of your trade."

Imagine standing at life's end, looking back at how you spent your limited time.

Among all possible investments—career, relationships, hobbies, wealth—which would matter most at that moment?

You know what's heartbreaking?

The thought that one day we might look back and realize that this extraordinary companion was within arm's reach our entire lives. Yet, we chose scrolling, streaming, and stressing instead of building that relationship.

Will you let The Qur'an be the spring of your heart?

No relationship is one-sided.

The Qur'an sits ready on your shelf "to be the best friend you ever had," waiting to illuminate your darkest moments.

But, like any relationship, it requires time, attention, and love.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When was the last time you opened the Qur'an with the intention of truly connecting with it rather than merely fulfilling an obligation?

  2. How might your relationship with the Qur'an change if you visualized it as a living companion.

👶 SunnahStories:

In a palace grand and bright,

Lived an elephant, strong in might.

His name was Jameel, so proud and tall,

The king’s great beast, beloved by all.

One day a hungry dog appeared,

With ribs so thin, his steps unclear.

He smelled the food and snuck inside,

By Jameel’s side, he dared to hide.

The elephant watched with gentle eyes,

And let the dog, to his surprise,

Eat and drink without a fight—

A friendship bloomed, pure and bright.

Each day, they ate and played around,

Until a merchant came to town.

"This dog looks strong—he should be mine!"

With coins of gold, he sealed the sign.

The dog was gone, his friend alone,

Jameel stood still, his joy now flown.

He did not eat, he did not play,

His heart was dark, his world turned gray.

The king soon heard, "Why does he weep?"

"His friend is gone, his pain is deep."

So off they searched, through field and town,

Until at last, Saif was found!

The merchant smiled, "Go back, my friend!"

And off the dog ran—joy had no end!

The elephant trumpeted with glee,

For true friends love eternally!

Reflection Questions:

1️⃣ Why did Jameel allow Saif to eat from his food?

2️⃣ What made their friendship strong despite their differences?

3️⃣ Why did Jameel stop eating when Saif was taken away?

4️⃣ What does Islam teach us about choosing good friends?

5️⃣ How can we be loyal and kind friends like Jameel and Saif?
