In Surah Quraysh, Allah reminds us of His care for the tribe of Quraysh, establishing a means of sustenance when none seemed possible.

Remember when Ibrahim (AS) left his family in a barren valley with "no greenery, no life, no water, no trees.”

A place where conventional wisdom would suggest nothing could grow or thrive.

Yet in this seemingly desolate land, Allah established the Quraysh and blessed them with provision.

Allah provides from sources we cannot imagine.

Where human eyes saw only emptiness, Allah created abundance.

This miracle plays in our own lives as well.

How often do we limit ourselves by looking only at apparent resources, forgetting that the One who fed people in a lifeless valley can certainly provide for us through unexpected channels?

Wealth in Islam: The Balance of Heart and Hand

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never condemned wealth itself.

Many companions, Uthman (RA), Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (RA), and Abu Bakr (RA) were wealthy individuals whose generosity flowed from their abundance.

Indeed, the early Islamic community was able to sustain itself largely due to the generosity and wealth of its early adherents.

When we examine history, we find that the financial sacrifices of companions like Abu Bakr (RA) and Khadijah (RA) were instrumental in supporting the developing Muslim community.

Rather than rejecting prosperity, Islam teaches us about the proper relationship with wealth: "Keep money in your pocket, not in your heart. Keep your heart for Allah ."

This spiritual wisdom offers us a transformative orientation.

The question is not whether we possess wealth, but whether wealth possesses us.

Do our resources serve as a means for good, or have they become the end that consumes our devotion?

For those with little, contentment is the highest ideal, while generosity becomes the ultimate path for those blessed with abundance.

Because the path of generosity is harder to achieve and sustain, it stands as the highest path.

The Prophet ﷺ himself would make dua for people to have wealth rather than poverty.

The religion acknowledges that material provision creates opportunities for spiritual growth and community care.

The Prophet's own household rarely ate to full satisfaction, even when resources were available to him.

His shield, as authentic narrations in Bukhari tell us, was left as collateral for food when he passed away, despite having inherited properties.

This teaches us that spiritual wealth often manifests as contentment rather than excess.

The Prophet ﷺ also modeled sustainable empowerment rather than creating dependency.

When a man asked him for help, instead of simply giving money, the Prophet ﷺ sold the man's worn garment, used part of the proceeds to buy him food, and helped him with the purchase of an axe.

He instructed the man to collect and sell wood, teaching him self-sufficiency.

When the man returned fifteen days later, he had earned ten dirhams, having learned to generate his own livelihood.

Islam envisions neither pure capitalism nor pure socialism, but a spiritual community where individuals maintain their dignity while ensuring no one is left behind.

In this vision, human dignity isn't measured by social status or profession, but by the purity of one's provision.

Whether one holds multiple PhDs or sweeps streets for a living, the true metric of dignity is simply ensuring one's income is halal earned through permissible, honest means.

When we keep our hearts reserved for Allah while using our resources for good, we experience a richness that no market fluctuation can diminish.

We become like those described in the hadith: "Whoever wakes up safe in his home, with health, and has food for that day, it is as if he has been given the whole world.”

Reflect On this:

  1. How do you currently balance your material pursuits with your spiritual growth? Are there areas where your pursuit of wealth might overshadow your pursuit of Allah?

🎬️ Ready. Set. Action!

  1. Identify one area of spending that might be excessive and commit to redirecting those funds toward helping others for one month.

Upon the shore so bright and free,

Two birds lived by the mighty sea.

They built their nest near waves so wide,

And laid their eggs with love and pride.

"But waves are strong," the husband said,

"What if the sea takes them to bed?"

"Fear not," she chirped, "we’ll keep them near,

The sea will not bring harm, my dear!"

But in the night, with roaring sound,

The waves came crashing all around.

Their eggs were lost, their hopes were drowned,

Their cries of sorrow filled the ground.

"We’ll take them back!" the wife declared,

"This sea will know how much we cared!"

And with her beak, so small, so light,

She scooped the waves with all her might.

Her husband sighed but joined her way,

And moved the sea both night and day.

The other birds just laughed in glee,

"You cannot drain the mighty sea!"

Yet drop by drop, they worked and prayed,

Their hope unshaken, faith displayed.

Then from the sea, a voice arose,

"Take back your eggs, your patience shows!"

The waves rolled in, so soft, so bright,

And placed their eggs within their sight.

For faith and patience, strong and true,

Can bring the hardest trials through.

Reflection Questions:

1️⃣ Why did Noura believe they could empty the sea?

2️⃣ What made Sami join his wife’s effort?

3️⃣ Why did the other birds mock them?

4️⃣ How did their patience and faith lead to success?

5️⃣ How can we apply this lesson in our own lives?
