The Inner Universe

Gaining Control Through Reflection

Reading time: 2 minutes

Silence is the gateway to wisdom; through it, the heart speaks.

Imam Al-Ghazali

We rarely see reality as it truly is.

Filters shape our perceptions—our egos, identities, and affiliations, whether rooted in race, culture, or societal roles.

These filters obscure our vision and prevent us from perceiving the truth unfiltered.

Meditation is tearing away these veils to behold reality in its purest form.

Through dhikr (remembrance) and reflection, the heart becomes a lamp, illuminating the good and evil within.

This inner light humbles us, reveals our flaws, and brings us closer to our Creator.

Mastering the Inner Universe

By age four or five, most children have learned to navigate their physical environment—turning things on, breaking them, and even putting them back together.

By the time they reach their teens, they can easily manipulate and control most aspects of the physical world.

But who teaches us how to control our inner world?

Who shows us how to master our thoughts, emotions, and mental landscapes, which often run wild and unchecked?

This is where meditation becomes essential.

It is not just about sitting still but about learning to observe, understand, and guide your inner universe.

Meditation teaches us to step back, recognize that our thoughts and feelings are not our essence, and approach them with detachment.

Confronting the Inner Pharaoh

When you sit in silence and stillness, closing off the distractions of the external world, you begin to see your thoughts.

Meditation forces you to confront what resides in your heart.

And what you find can be humbling—or even terrifying.

As Shaykh Mendes reminds us, “When you look within, you might see the Pharaoh, Haman, and Abu Lahab of your soul.”

These are the manifestations of pride, arrogance, and ignorance that live within all of us.

It is only by facing these inner tyrants that we can understand and detach from them, purify our hearts, and become true vicegerents of Allah on earth.

This self-awareness is not meant to break us but to transform us. It reminds us that while outward religiosity—prayers, fasting, and rituals—is essential, the true battle lies within.

Meditation is a tool to help us win that battle, to cultivate humility, and to remove the darkness of ignorance and pride.

Practical Steps for Reflection

A few intentional steps can prepare the mind and heart for meaningful reflection:

  • Begin with Wudu: Physical purification sets the stage for spiritual cleansing.

  • Face the Qibla: Orient yourself toward the Ka’bah, a reminder of Allah’s presence.

  • Use Perfume: Fragrance creates a pure environment, attracting angels and invoking a more positive state of mind.

  • Empty Your Heart: Release anger, resentment, or hatred before beginning.

  • Stay Focused: Don’t fight your thoughts; observe them with detachment and let them pass.

These steps create a space where the heart can reflect deeply, whether on an ayah of the Quran, a name of Allah, or an aspect of your life.

Begin the Journey

Reflection is a transformative journey.

This practice allows you to see beyond the surface of life’s challenges, creating a vital space between your thoughts, emotions, and reactions.

In this space, you gain greater self-control and cultivate a calm, clear, and composed approach to the world.

Our tradition has many methods of meditation. If this topic resonates with you, let us know, and we can explore some of these powerful practices in greater depth throughout the week, Insha’Allah.
