The Hidden Gifts of Hunger
This Ramadan, The Daily Sunnah is partnering with Islamic Ummah Relief to support orphans and widows in Africa—because no one in our Ummah should go hungry or thirsty.
Bismillah. Welcome to DailySunnah.
You’re fasting. You’re hungry. You’re thinking about food.
Maybe even daydreaming about iftar.
But what if I told you that feeling of hunger is your door to Allah?
Hunger isn’t just a physical experience—it’s a deep spiritual state.

🤲 Du’a for Hafiza
Imam Al-Ghazali said that gluttony is the gateway to the diseases of the heart—things like arrogance, heedlessness, and spiritual numbness.
That’s a strong statement.
But how often does constant indulgence make us feel self-absorbed or disconnected from Allah?
It can be hard to notice, but there’s a certain complacency and lack of care when we’re lying down after a big meal, too full to move, much less reflect or worship.
Instead of gratitude, we slip into heedlessness, letting the weight of indulgence numb our spiritual state.
One saying goes, “Whoever deprives his belly, his thinking is greater, and his heart is perceptive.”
And science backs this up.
When you fast, your body isn’t busy digesting food, so your blood isn’t all in your stomach—it’s going to your brain.
That focused, energized feeling you get between hunger pangs?
That’s your body waking up.
It’s like the opposite of a food coma—you’re in clarity mode.
But let’s be honest, it’s not always easy.
Sometimes, you hit a point where you feel like a zombie.
Your brain fogs up, your limbs feel weak, and you can only think about that first bite of iftar.
But instead of fighting that feeling, what if you leaned into it?
What if you took that moment to slow down and realize how dependent you are on Allah?
Hunger softens us, making us more receptive to the sweetness of remembering Him.
It breaks down the walls of arrogance and the illusion of self-sufficiency that harden us.
It’s humbling.
And in that humility, there is serenity.
Weakness can be beautiful because it draws us closer to the One who is truly strong.
So take that feeling—that deep need—and bring it to the prayer mat or into a quiet moment of connection with Allah.
Fasting and Freedom
Fasting strips life down to its essentials.
It simplifies things.
When you’re walking around in the afternoon, stomach empty, you realize something profound:
I actually don’t need much from this world.
It’s a feeling of tranquility, of peace.
Then, iftar finally comes. You're excited and dig right in.
You take a few bites, and within minutes, you’re full.
And suddenly, you realize—was this really what I was waiting for all day?
The anticipation, the hunger, the cravings—they vanish in an instant.
It makes you reflect on how fleeting worldly desires really are.
How often do we chase things, thinking they’ll fulfill us, only to find short-lived satisfaction?
When we need less, we are free.
By embracing hunger, we’re not just going through Ramadan—we’re growing through it.
So next time your stomach growls, smile.
It’s a sign that you’re being refined, sharpened, and transformed.
And hey, Maghrib will come eventually.
Just stay strong.
Reflect on this:
When was the last time hunger made you reflect on something deeper?
How does fasting change your perspective on your daily habits?

👶 SunnahStories:
By the blue and endless sea,
Lived a man, as poor could be.
Kareem, the fisherman, cast his net,
Yet no fish had he caught as yet.
He thought, “Perhaps a tune so sweet,
Will bring the fish up to my feet!”
He played his flute, so light and free,
Hoping fish would leap with glee.
But down below, the fish stayed still,
For such a tune was not their will.
They did not dance, they did not rise,
No fish appeared before his eyes.
Frustrated, tired, and feeling weak,
His empty hands began to seek.
He cast his net both far and wide,
And pulled the fish from deep inside.
They flipped and flapped upon the shore,
Where they had not been caught before.
One seemed to whisper, “Don’t you see?
This is how it’s meant to be.”
"We do not dance to idle sound,
But when you strive, we can be found.
Not mere dreams, nor tunes so grand,
But effort makes success at hand."
Kareem recalled the words so true,
Of Prophet ﷺ—who always knew:
"Tie your camel, trust in His way,
Work and pray, and never stray."
So he labored hard and placed his trust,
In Allah, the Most Fair and Just.
Reflection Questions:
Why didn’t the fish respond to the fisherman’s music?
What lesson did the fisherman learn about effort?
How does this story relate to trusting Allah while working hard?
Can you think of a time when you had to work hard for something?
How can we balance effort and trust in our daily lives?
