The Ayahs Around You
Lessons from Nature
Reading time: 2 minutes
Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts.
One of the simplest and most profound ways to engage in tafakkur (contemplation) is through a mindful walk.
This practice doesn’t require you to reflect on specific verses of the Quran or the names of Allah; instead, it invites you to open your heart and mind to the signs of Allah all around you.
As you walk, pay attention to the details—the feel of your feet touching the earth, the movement of the trees, the chirping of birds, the hum of insects.
Every element of nature is an ayah—a sign of Allah’s presence and creativity.
Take a pen and paper with you to jot down any thoughts that arise.
Don’t force meaning; observe and let the signs around you speak.
As one scholar beautifully said, “If your heart is alive, everything will be a teacher for you.”
Walking for the Body and the Soul
While a mindful walk enhances our spiritual awareness, science also reveals its many physical and mental benefits.
Boosts Brain Health: A study from New Mexico Highlands University found that the force of our footsteps increases blood flow to the brain, nourishing it with oxygen and nutrients.
Enhances Creativity: Researchers at Stanford University discovered that walking improves “creative divergent thinking,” helping people generate new ideas and solve problems more effectively.
Improves Mental Health: A Duke University study revealed that walking can be as effective as medication in treating certain cases of major depression.
These benefits highlight the holistic nature of walking. It engages the body, mind, and heart, creating a harmony that is deeply aligned with our fitrah (natural disposition).
Transforming Worship Through Reflection
We must first disconnect from life’s distractions to truly connect with Allah's signs.
Silence your phone, step away from screens, and leave behind the demands of your day.
Unplugging clears mental clutter and creates space for clarity and presence.
The purpose of tafakkur is transformation.
By reflecting on Allah’s signs, you deepen your connection to Him.
This awareness enriches your worship—your Salah becomes more focused, your dhikr more meaningful, and your connection with Allah more profound.
As your insights grow, you’ll begin to see meaning in everything.
Every moment and event holds lessons, shaping your perspective and transforming how you approach worship and life.
Reflection becomes a pathway to greater gratitude, mindfulness, and spiritual growth.
