Emulate the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم

A Guide to Spiritual Opening

Reading time: 2 minutes

Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.

By following the Sunnah, we engage in actions that amplify our remembrance of Allah, deepen our love, and draw us closer to Him.

"Constantly remembering Allah reinforces fellowship with Him and necessitates love, such that the pleasure of remembrance is magnified.

The amount of pleasure experienced is proportional to the amount of love, and the amount of love is proportional to the amount of knowledge and remembrance."

-Ghazali

Every Sunnah we adopt becomes a step toward greater spiritual fulfillment.

Resembling the Angels: Elevating Our Souls

Human happiness is found in transcending base desires and emulating the purity of the angels. This involves:

  • Withdrawing from Excessive Desires: Restraining the ego that commands evil and distancing ourselves from heedless indulgence.

  • Harnessing Our Actions: Using the guidance of the Sunnah as a harness to steer our actions toward righteousness.

  • Embracing Servitude to Allah: Recognizing that true freedom lies in submitting to the Divine Will rather than being enslaved by our desires.

When we habitually follow our whims without restraint, we risk allowing our baser instincts to dominate.

By contrast, adhering to the Sunnah disciplines the soul, aligns us with divine purpose, and elevates our spiritual state.

The Magnitude of Small Actions

Some may question the importance of following the Sunnah in seemingly minor matters. Yet, these actions carry significant weight.

Putting on our shoes starting with the right foot, eating with our hands, and greeting each other with the Salaam may seem small, but they hold immense benefits.

Though these acts might appear insignificant, following the Sunnah in such moments strengthens our resolve to emulate the Prophet ﷺ in every aspect of our lives.

There are wondrous aspects in the actions of Allah, whose connections remain hidden from us.

Though their special properties may be beyond our perception, through experience, we learn that they carry profound effects, even when their relationships are not fully understood.

Organizing Our Lives Around Goodness

Time is a precious commodity, and organizing it wisely is essential. We are encouraged to:

  • Divide Our Time: Allocate periods for different good actions throughout the day and night.

  • Engage in Remembrance: Use every opportunity to remember Allah, whether through prayer, supplication, recitation of the Qur'an, or contemplation.

  • Balance Duties with Devotion: Fulfill worldly responsibilities while keeping our hearts connected to Allah.

We should remain conscious of Allah even in our work and daily tasks.

By maintaining this balance, we ensure that our entire lives become acts of worship.

Believing in the Unseen Wisdom

There are aspects of the Sunnah whose benefits we may not immediately comprehend. However, just as we trust a doctor’s advice for our physical well-being, we should trust the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ for our spiritual well-being.

"How great is the foolishness of someone who believes the physician in regards to matters more farfetched, yet does not believe the Prophet ﷺ who has been exposed to the secrets of the spiritual realm!" - Ghazali

Our faith calls us to trust in Allah's wisdom and His Messenger, even when the reasons are beyond our understanding.

If you observe that the Prophet ﷺ, though able to choose between two permissible things, turns away from one and prefers the other, know that this choice is not arbitrary.

Rather, by the light of prophethood, he is aware of a hidden wisdom, a subtle secret from the unseen realm that guides him to what is spiritually superior.

Conclusion: The Journey to Eternal Happiness

The Sunnah is not merely a set of rituals; it is a holistic way of life that leads to true happiness and fulfillment. By embracing the Sunnah in everything we do, we:

  • Purify and illuminate our hearts.

  • Strengthen our relationship with Allah.

  • Elevate our souls above base desires.

  • Transform mundane actions into acts of worship.

Let us strive to incorporate the Sunnah into every aspect of our lives, no matter how small.

In doing so, we align ourselves with the path of those whom Allah has favored and unlock the doors to eternal happiness.
