Becoming Strong for Allah
Why Strength in All Forms Matters
Reading time: 2 minutes
A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone,
Seek help from Allah and do not lose heart
The early days in Mecca were fraught with persecution.
The small group of Muslims faced relentless oppression, practicing their faith in secrecy, their voices hushed by fear of retaliation.
Amidst this climate of intimidation, the conversion of Hamza (RA), the Prophet's ﷺ brave uncle, sent ripples through the Quraysh.
Known for his valor and prowess, Hamza's (RA) acceptance of Islam added a formidable shield to the vulnerable community.
Yet, Umar ibn al-Khattab's (RA) embrace of Islam would tilt the scales.
Umar (RA), a man of imposing stature, was feared and respected in equal measure.
Upon accepting Islam, Umar's (RA) first thought was to announce the truth he had found.
He approached the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, are we not upon the truth whether we live or die?"
The Prophet ﷺ affirmed, "Indeed, by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you are upon the truth whether you live or die."
"Then why do we hide?" Umar (RA) asked.
With that, a new chapter began.
The Prophet ﷺ agreed to make their faith public.
He organized the Muslims into two lines: one led by Hamza (RA) and the other by Umar (RA).
Imagine the sight—men and women who had once cowered in the shadows now stepping into the daylight.
They set out towards the Kaaba, their voices united in glorifying Allah.
The Quraysh watched in astonishment as the Muslims approached, led by two of Mecca's most formidable figures.
As they reached the Kaaba, they began to circumambulate it openly, declaring Allah's oneness.
The air was charged with tension.
The oppressors, who had wielded fear as a weapon, were disarmed.
Who would dare confront Hamza (RA), the Lion of Allah, or Umar (RA), whose presence commanded respect?
But Umar (RA) was not satisfied with mere presence; he wanted the message to echo through every corner of Mecca.
He sought out Jamil ibn Ma'mar al-Jumahi, a man notorious for spreading news—true or otherwise.
Approaching him, Umar (RA) declared, "O Jamil, I have embraced Islam."
Jamil, shocked yet eager, hurried to the Kaaba, shouting to all within earshot, "O people of Quraysh! Umar has apostatized!"
Umar (RA) followed him calmly and corrected, "He lies. I have not apostatized but have believed in Allah alone and His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ."
The revelation of Umar's (RA) conversion ignited the fury of the Quraysh.
A mob formed, intent on silencing this new threat.
They advanced towards Umar (RA).
One by one, they attacked, and one by one, Umar (RA) repelled them.
The brawl intensified, but Umar's (RA) resolve only grew stronger.
Despite being outnumbered, he continued to fend off every challenger.
Eventually, he seized the leader of the mob, pinning him down and declaring, "If you wish for your companion to live, then back away!"
The Quraysh fearfully retreated.
Umar's (RA) stand that day was not just a physical victory but a triumph of faith over fear.
The Impact of Strength
This bold display emboldened other Muslims. They would no longer hide in the shadows; the time had come to practice their faith openly.
The strength of Umar (RA) and Hamza (RA) infused the community with newfound confidence.
Strength is multifaceted—it encompasses faith, character, physical ability, knowledge, and resources.
It's about being resilient in the face of trials, steadfast in our beliefs, and proactive in seeking beneficial outcomes for oneself and the community.
Our faith encourages us to seek strength to improve ourselves and the Ummah.
This pursuit enables us to uphold justice, aid others, and contribute positively to society.
To help others through their challenges—be they emotional, financial, or social—we must first be strong ourselves.
The Ummah faces numerous social, economic, and educational challenges.
By striving to excel in various fields, we position ourselves to address these challenges effectively.
Whether it's acquiring knowledge, developing skills, attaining economic stability, or maintaining physical health, each aspect of strength somehow equips us to serve Allah's cause.
We live in a world where influence follows resources, skills, and knowledge.
We have much to contribute with our collective wealth, the talents within our communities, and the knowledge we possess.
Let us harness these blessings, turning them into tools of positive change for our Ummah.
We can change societies when Muslims harness their talents and resources and unify our hearts.
Let us be resilient in faith, steadfast in our endeavors, and united in our purpose to serve Allah and uplift our communities.
Reflection:
Are there specific areas where I need to build strength to contribute more effectively to my community?
