Start Small, Dream Big

Creating a Mindful Relationship With the Living Earth

Reading time: 2 minutes

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Aristotle

If you’re like most people, there’s a gap between the person you are and the person you want to be.

You have dreams of becoming better—praying more consistently, reciting Qur’an daily, or cultivating a sunnah-inspired lifestyle.

But the path from intention to action often feels overwhelming.

The Jungle of Your Mind

Picture your brain as a dense jungle. Every decision and action you make is like forging a path through that jungle.

At first, it’s tough to navigate, and it takes effort to clear a trail. But the more you repeat an action, the more defined the path becomes—eventually turning into a highway.

This is how habits are formed.

Over time, these “highways” make certain actions feel automatic and effortless. But this is also why change feels hard—our brains prefer the comfort of well-trodden paths over creating new ones.

The good news?

By starting small and staying consistent, you can carve out new trails and slowly turn them into highways.

The Blessing of Islamic Habits

Islam provides a beautiful framework for living a better life.

The actions prescribed in our deen bring us closer to Allah and enhance our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Wanting to follow in the Prophet’s (ﷺ) footsteps is a noble goal—and the process of striving for it has its own built-in reward system.

When you begin to pray regularly, read Qur’an, or incorporate sunnah acts into your day, you’ll notice these habits naturally affect other areas of your life.

A few small changes can create a ripple effect, transforming your mindset and bringing barakah into your actions.

How to Build Better Habits

Rather than relying on sheer willpower, make minor adjustments that are easy and sustainable. Here’s how:

1. Start Small:

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to change everything at once.

Focus on one small action. If you want to pray all your Salah on time, start with just Fajr for one week, or focus on the fardh prayers.

The goal is to get your brain used to initiating the action.

Even praying two rakats, opening the Qur’an, or sitting down to drink your water are wins. Celebrate these small steps and appreciate your growth as it unfolds.

2. Use Triggers:

Create cues to remind you to act.

When you hear the Adhaan or your prayer app sends a notification, use it as your signal to pause and prepare for Salah.

Lay out your prayer mat after making wudu, or commit to just washing your face to start the process.

Once this sequence becomes familiar, it will feel effortless and natural.

3. Pair Actions with Joy:

Combine your habit with something you enjoy.

While it may be hard to feel the spiritual uplift at first, take a moment afterward to appreciate the internal shift.

Reward yourself for completing your prayers—small acknowledgments can reinforce your motivation.

4. Stay Consistent:

Consistency is key. The more you repeat an action, the easier it becomes.

Over time, what feels hard now will become second nature.

Set your priorities, remind yourself of their importance, and take action daily.

Take the first step, no matter how small it seems, and trust in Allah to guide your journey.

Every effort, no matter how tiny, is a step closer to Him.

Remember, change is not a destination—it’s a direction.
