A Spark of Goodness
Bridging the Gap
Reading time: 2 minutes
No matter how great your sins, Allah’s mercy is greater.
A brigand and his gang had just finished robbing a caravan. As they celebrated their success, laughing and sharing drinks, one of his companions offered him some juice. To everyone’s surprise, the brigand declined, explaining that he was fasting.
Among the victims was a man known for his piety, who had been present during the robbery. He couldn’t hide his astonishment and asked, “How can you be fasting while you commit these wrongs?”
The brigand replied earnestly, “I fast because I want to leave at least one door open between myself and Allah’s mercy.”
Moved by the sincerity in his words, the pious man silently prayed for him, hoping that this small act of devotion might start a journey back to the right path.
Human beings are complex and not defined solely by their mistakes. Even those who seem far from the path of righteousness may still yearn for a connection with Allah.
Years later, the righteous man encountered the same brigand performing Tawaf at the Ka’bah.
The brigand shared that Allah had accepted his repentance, explaining, “I left the door open between Allah and me, and He accepted me and let me in.”
This story powerfully illustrates Allah’s boundless mercy and the transformative potential of even the most minor acts of worship.
It challenges us to rethink how we approach those who are struggling.
Every positive action, however small, is a step toward Allah.
Instead of focusing on what someone is doing wrong, we should encourage them to do one thing right.
This idea aligns with the Japanese concept of kaizen—the philosophy of continuous improvement through small, incremental steps.
Whether praying one prayer consistently, donating a small amount to charity, or making dhikr during a commute, these little acts build momentum and help bridge the gap between who we are and who we aspire to be.
Even amid his misdeeds, the brigand clung to a spark of goodness. His fasting, though seemingly at odds with his actions, served as a lifeline to his Creator.
It’s easy to feel disconnected from our spiritual goals, but this story reminds us that Allah’s mercy is always within reach.
By encouraging ourselves and others to take small steps toward goodness, we promote hope and keep the door open to a closer relationship with Allah.
