I asked Abu Sa`id, and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, "We practiced I`tikaf (seclusion in the mosque) in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet (ﷺ) . In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) came and addressed us and said, 'I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in I`tikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10-day's period)', and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the mosque which was made of date-palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead.
There are fascinating phenomena around us that call for our attention - an unprecedented earthquake in the Northeast, from New York to DC, and an upcoming eclipse.
Such rare events prompt us to question their significance and connection to Laylatul Qadr.
The traditional understanding of Laylatul Qadr describes it as a peaceful night, characterized by stillness and clarity.
Our dear Prophet gave us distinct signs regarding this remarkable night - it’s tranquil, maybe sprinkled with a light rain, the moon is clear and bright and the sun rises without rays the next morning.
But what about these rare events, these changes in nature, like earthquakes and eclipses?
Does it carry any message for us?
Here’s an interesting point of contemplation - the very stillness and predictability of nature that we take for granted can be disrupted, pointing us to our vulnerability and our lack of total control.
These signs remind us of our dependence on Allah’s mercy.
Seeking His forgiveness puts us in the path of His blessings.
We cannot afford to be arrogant, expecting good things while maintaining evil ways.
Our conceit can betray us.
The blessing and the bounty that come from the sky and the earth are ours until we disrupt the balance – then the same sky can shower stones and the same earth can swallow us whole. Hence, our relationship with Allah is at the heart of these understanding.
The intention here is not to instill fear, but to shake us awake from our complacency.
Laylatul Qadr is a powerful night filled with mercy and forgiveness.
It is a time to invoke Allah’s Mercy, ask for forgiveness and introspect on our sins, which act as barriers between us and His Mercy.
Another essential point to ponder is our role within our societies.
Communities worldwide cry out for justice, and if we are not countering the oppression we know exists, we could be adding to their burden.
What the earth shakes under your feet, and the most powerful feel as vulnerable as an insect, we must remember - we all have roles to play for justice and peace.
Lastly, in these blessed days, as we hope to immerse ourselves in Allah’s mercy, let’s present all our sins before Him, knowing that His mercy can overcome and forgive all our trespasses.
Let us continue to ask for His forgiveness, mercy, and find the means of ease for the oppressed, relief from their burdens, and a victory over oppressors.
