The Sunnah of Social Housekeeping
The example of a good companion in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's furnace; from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the furnace would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof.
Do we prefer to spend time in the fragrances of the musk seller or sit beside the bellowing furnace?
Yesterday, we discussed personal spiritual fragrances.
Now, It’s time to assess the fragrances of our connections.
Humans are hardwired with a negativity bias, a tendency to readily register negative stimuli and dwell on these events.
In the realm of emotions and the human spirit, negativity is a significant detractor. Even a minuscule amount of negativity can overshadow a multitude of positives. We've experienced situations wherein one toxic individual can ruin the dynamics, casting an aura of negativity over our lives. If we continue to allow such a person space and weight in our lives, it's no longer their fault.
We need the courage and strength to cut ties and protect ourselves and our groups from undue stress and unhappiness.
In this digital age, dealing with negativity can be quite challenging. While there will always be those who seem to enjoy spreading negativity, the best way to tackle such situations is to block, ignore, and delete such influences. Focus on those who love and respect you and add value to your life.
Take the time to do some social housekeeping.
Consider eliminating unproductive connections.
Detach from situations that subject our values to ridicule or disrespect.
Create distance from scenarios until the narrative changes and the offensive elements subside.
Limit access wisely, allowing only those who bring positivity and respect into our lives.
Through the housekeeping of our social connections, we're practicing a significant but forgotten part of the Prophet's sunnah, cleansing our lives from toxicities and creating a space for peace and growth.
And remember, make du’a for them.
Insha'allah.
