Shining in Sha'ban

I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as Shaban.'

He said: 'That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.

In the month of Sha’ban, we are offered a golden opportunity to renew our relationship with Allah, cleanse our spiritual selves, and revitalize our faith.

Just as a dedicated athlete would intensively prepare for a big game, we as believers, should utilize the month of Sha’ban to advance in our spiritual training leading up to Ramadan.

The beauty of Sha’ban is that it allows us to adopt a proactive approach to spirituality rather than a reactive one. It provides a time for us to introspect, reflect, familiarize ourselves with our spiritual strengths and weaknesses, and strategize how to optimize our Ramadan experience. We need to ensure that by Ramadan, we are spiritually, mentally, and physically ready to partake in this blessed month, reaping as many benefits as possible.

Above all, Shab’an allows us to develop what we could call spiritual alertness.

This is the ability to spot and seize spiritual “business deals”.

To be spiritually alert means to be fully present in our daily prayers, to willingly give charity even when we fear poverty, to extend forgiveness even when it’s not expected, and to fast voluntarily when others are eating.

It is about doing more, doing quicker, and showing more enthusiasm for what everyone else is doing.

Sha’ban, then, is our time to shine.

It is our time to distinguish ourselves by willingly and enthusiastically participating in acts of worship, even when others are not.

It sets apart those who are spiritually vigorous from those who are simply coasting.

The beauty of all of this?

Not only do we receive immense spiritual rewards, but we also develop a certain level of spiritual resilience that can tide us over in times of hardship.

Allah doesn’t leave us guessing.

He has laid clear guidelines for us, showing us the best times and places to seek His mercy.

As we journey through the month of Sha’ban, let us remind ourselves that it is not just about showing up but about truly surrendering to Allah’s will, loving, worshipping, and obeying him wholeheartedly.

It’s about preparing ourselves for the blessed month of Ramadan.

Indeed, our time to shine is now.
