Seven Silver Coins

Bismillah. Welcome to DailySunnah.

We invite you to journey with us through a story from the final moments of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.

It is a tale that reminds us that true wealth is measured not in possessions but in the spirit of your heart.

The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to become more generous in Ramadan

In the humble house of the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah, fever consumed his strength.

It was Sunday, the day before his passing, and despite his illness, he had concerns he had to take care of.

But he couldn’t move much and could barely stay conscious.

During a brief moment awake, when the fever subsided, he turned to his beloved wife, Aisha (RA), and asked:

"How much money do I have?"

Aisha (RA) searched through their modest home, returning with a small pouch containing seven silver coins, maybe enough to buy provisions for a day.

That would be around 15-20 dollars today.

Mind you, this is the most powerful and influential person in Arabia at the time.

The Prophet's ﷺ hands received the coins, gently transferring them from one palm to another.

His blessed gaze reflected contemplation and worry.

"What will I say to Allah if I meet Him with these coins?" he asked.

With determination, he placed them back into Aisha's (RA) hands. "Go give it to the poor now."

Before she could respond, the intensity of his fever returned, and he fell unconscious again.

When he awakened later, his eyes found Aisha (RA), and immediately, before anything else—he asked, "Have you given it to the poor?"

Aisha (RA), busy aching at the Prophet's ﷺ suffering, had not left his side. "I will do it later," she assured him, attending to his needs with loving care.

The fever overcame him once more.

Upon awakening again, the same question formed immediately:

"Have you given it to the poor?"

Though his voice had weakened, the concern in his expression remained unchanged.

Throughout that long Sunday, this pattern continued.

Each brief return to consciousness, each momentary respite from his illness, his first words were of those few coins still in his possession.

Each time he awoke, however briefly, his heart turned immediately to his Lord and his unfulfilled responsibility.

Aisha (RA) watched as the man who had led armies, who had changed the course of history, and who had won the hearts of thousands now used every precious moment of energy to continue his work and ensure even these seven silver coins reached those in need.

Eventually, she understood.

Leaving his side just long enough to fulfill his wish, she distributed the coins to the poor of Madinah.

When she returned, and he awakened once more, she whispered, "It is done."

A look of peace settled upon his noble face before the fever returned.

Years later, Aisha (RA) would often recount those final days. "When the Prophet ﷺ died," she would say, "there was nothing in his house of gold and silver. The only thing left was some morsels of barley in a small cup."

She would share, with wonder in her voice, how she continued using from this cup for a long time.

"It occurred to me that it was never finishing," she would explain, "so I measured it one day, and within a short time, it finished."

The man who had transformed the world had so few possessions at his passing.

Even the land he owned had already been given away to the poor.

The night before he departed this world to meet his Lord, his home contained nothing of value—no coins, treasures, or wealth to count.

Just a legacy of compassion and devotion that would change the world and our lives forever.

May Allah send Infinite Blessing on our Beloved Prophet ﷺ.

Reflect on this

  1. What does the Prophet’s ﷺ unwavering focus on charity, even in his final moments, reveal about the true nature of wealth?

  2. What uplifting lessons about resilience and selflessness do you take away from his unwavering concern for others?

👶 SunnahStories:

Upon a farm where wheat fields sway,

A village mouse worked through the day.

With simple meals and skies so wide,

He lived with peace and joy inside.

But one fine day, his cousin came,

A city mouse of wealth and fame.

"Dear Hamza, leave this quiet land,

And taste the best—so rich, so grand!"

The city glowed with lanterns bright,

With food and sweets—a grand delight!

"Come, eat your fill!" the rich mouse cried,

"Here, cheese and nuts are set inside!"

But just as Hamza took a bite,

A shadow moved—a fearful sight!

The kitchen door swung open wide,

A cat appeared with glowing eyes!

The mice then hid with hearts so fast,

They held their breath till danger passed.

"Is this the price for food so fine?"

"I'd rather have a meal that's mine."

"For in my home, I sleep with ease,

No fear, no rush—just gentle breeze."

*"True wealth is peace," the small mouse said,

"Contentment keeps the heart well-fed."

2️⃣ What made Hamza realize he preferred his simple life?

3️⃣ What does Islam teach us about contentment and gratitude?

4️⃣ Can you think of a time when you were grateful for what you had?

5️⃣ How can we avoid chasing wealth at the cost of peace?
