The Spiritual Depth of As-Salaamu Alaikum
How a Simple Greeting Can Transform Our Daily Interactions
Reading time: 2 minutes
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! You will not enter Jannah until you believe, and you shall not believe until you love one another.
May I inform you of something, if you do, you love each other.
Promote greeting amongst you (by saying As-salamu 'alaikum to one another)".
Peace, safety, and honor—these virtues are the root of the word "Salam."
At its core, "Salam" signifies a commitment to peace and safety for others, wishing them free from harmful intentions and actions, verbal or otherwise, while imparting respect and building connection.
Deeply contemplating these meanings can fundamentally shift the nature of our interactions and guide us toward becoming better versions of ourselves.
When you utter 'As-Salaamu Alaikum,' you do more than fulfill a religious duty or adhere to social etiquette.
When mindfully spoken, this greeting sets a positive intention at the start of our interaction. It is an act of compassion, a promise of tranquility, and an invitation to harmonious co-existence.
This contrasts with typical American greetings such as "Hello" or "Hey," which often merely capture someone's attention and lack inherent meaning, reflecting a certain emptiness or self-centeredness.
The book "Charisma Myth" distills charisma into two essential qualities: warmth and presence.
We cultivate awareness and compassion by greeting others with "As-Salaamu Alaikum" when expressed with heartfelt emotion and sincerity.
This approach leads to more meaningful interactions. The foundation of developing close relationships lies in this warmth, a genuine desire for the well-being of others, which we convey through our focused attention during our interactions.
Islam and Buddhism share practices of making dua and wishing well to loved ones, strangers, and even those with whom we are in conflict.
This intentional practice of wishing for wellness and peace has been proven to increase positive emotions, decrease negative emotions, enhance empathy, and foster a stronger sense of community.
Making dua, especially for those we harbor ill feelings towards, is a remedy to remove jealousy, hatred, and anger.
This is why the Prophet (SAW) emphasized greeting each other with "As-Salaamu Alaikum" to increase our love for one another.
It's about spreading harmony, refining our good intentions, and helping to encourage an atmosphere of growth.
When we meet a fellow Muslim at the store or on the street and greet them with 'As-Salaamu Alaikum,' their response is instantly a smile, transforming strangers into companions through this beautiful greeting.
When we turn 'As-Salaamu Alaikum' into a dua—it becomes a prayer for the other person and ourselves.
In the spiritual realm, it is said that when we make dua for others, the angels respond, "And for you the same."
Living by these principles increases our ability to act with empathy, communicate with presence, and create meaningful relationships.
This greeting is not merely a word; with the right intention, it can be a powerful tool for social cohesion and personal transformation.
