The Sadaqa of Scent

Beloved to me of the things of this world are women and perfume.

Eminent figures like Imam Malik (RA), would follow a specific ritual - taking a refreshing bath and anointing himself with impressive scents.

Here's why.

The fragrance he enveloped himself in created a serene, uplifting environment. It elevated the senses and mood of the students, reminding them, consciously or subliminally, of the beauty of paradise.

It's essentially a form of sadaqa.

Let me explain.

When we first apply perfume, we enjoy its scent ourselves, but we don't notice it anymore after a while. However, as we meet others, they can experience its pleasant fragrance. Thus, the primary purpose of wearing perfume is not to indulge ourselves but to create a pleasant experience for others.

Here's something that might surprise you: our beloved Prophet, renowned for his simplicity and humility, was also known for his generosity when it came to purchasing perfumes like oud and musk.

We are actually encouraged to invest in good perfumes.

It is a fragrant gateway to a mindful, respectful, and altruistic lifestyle, enhancing our interactions and promoting mutual respect in all our lives.

It’s an act so simple yet impactful that reaffirms the essence of our faith: reminding us of Paradise and spreading a sense of joy and delight to others.
