The Lurking Shirk

The Social Dilemma of Riya

Reading Time: 1 min

What I fear for you the most is the minor shirk, that is riya.

In our spiritual journey, we seek to perfect our deeds. However, a subtle opponent often remains unnoticed.

Our beloved Prophet cautioned us about the pitfalls of riya and embodied a life teaching us the essence of genuine devotion and service.

Today, the digital era intensifies the challenge. Social comparison, the act of measuring oneself against others, has been magnified by social media. This can sometimes push individuals to broadcast their achievements, unintentionally creating riya.

Interestingly, research suggests that when we publicize our noble intentions, we often feel a sense of accomplishment, reducing our drive to see those intentions through to completion.

Yet, hope lies in our intrinsic motivation — the internal desire to engage in acts for their inherent value instead of public recognition. By nurturing this form of motivation in our worship and service, we can center our actions on our bond with Allah (swt), steering clear of riya's effects.

May Allah guide us to sincerity in all our endeavors.

🪞 Reflection:
Contemplate the influence of social comparison and approval in your life.

How might it be shaping your intentions?

Make an intention to strengthen your intrinsic motivation, directing your efforts towards Allah's (swt) pleasure.
