Reclaiming True Submission
The Trap of Convenience
Reading time: 2 minutes
None of you [truly] believes until his desires are subservient to that which I have brought
We often approach Islam like consumers, selecting what aligns with our feelings, desires, and comforts while conveniently setting aside what challenges us. This mindset distorts our relationship with Allah and leads us away from the essence of our faith.
Revelation was sent as guidance, a source of comfort, and healing for the hearts of believers. Yet, Shaytan’s role is to twist what is beautiful into something ugly and to make what is harmful appear desirable.
He exploits our feelings, tempting us to prioritize our whims over the divine wisdom of Allah’s commands.
Allah’s laws are not arbitrary but safeguards against the harm we can inflict upon ourselves.
Consider a child who loves chocolate. If we allow them to eat it endlessly because it makes them happy, we harm their health and their ability to enjoy nourishing food.
Similarly, when we allow our desires to dictate our actions, we risk spiritual and emotional harm.
Allah, in His mercy, teaches us to control our impulses, to rise above fleeting desires, and to trust in His wisdom.
Yet many of us treat Islam like a marketplace, picking what feels convenient and leaving behind what feels difficult.
We might love the spiritual high of Ramadan but struggle with overeating or backbiting.
We may feel inspired to give charity but resist rulings on inheritance.
This selective approach to faith is dangerous; it reduces our relationship with Allah to negotiation rather than submission.
Allah warns the Prophet (ﷺ) in the Quran: "And beware, so they do not lure you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you." (Quran 5:49)
This verse underscores the danger of letting societal pressures or personal desires influence our adherence to divine guidance.
When we prioritize comfort over conviction or society’s approval over Allah’s commands, we risk diluting the essence of Islam.
Our focus should be on avoiding major sins, not performing minor good deeds while clinging to significant transgressions.
Perfection is not required of us, but submission to Allah’s rulings and acceptance of His truth is fundamental to being a Muslim.
It is this mindset—elevating the Prophetic way above our intellect and desires—that distinguishes true submission.
Islam is a comprehensive way of life, lovingly designed by Allah to guide us toward ultimate success.
At times, our nafs (ego) will try to justify ignoring certain parts of Islam, especially the ones that challenge us the most.
But it is often in these difficult areas that we find the most profound growth, the deepest connection to Allah, and the greatest transformation.
Trust that His guidance is always for your ultimate benefit.
Reflection:
What habits or behaviors have I been “shopping for” in my faith, picking what’s convenient and neglecting the rest?
What did you think of today's reflection? |
