Poems For the Gamou

Picture a warm evening in the heart of a small Senegalese village, Medina Baye.

The night prayers have just concluded, and a profound sense of serenity envelops the courtyard and prayer hall of the mosque.

Thousands of souls gather here, reciting the Qurʾān and heartfelt poetry in praise of our eternal beloved, Sayyidinā Muḥammad ﷺ.

It's a moment of pure devotion and connection.

Now, imagine the atmosphere suddenly shifting as a grand white SUV arrives, and a majestic figure steps out. The crowds in the mosque's courtyard are drawn to him like magnets.

His radiant smile, contrasting beautifully with his richly melanated skin, warms the hearts of the lovers and admirers of the Prophet ﷺ.

This man is Shaykh Muḥammad al-Amīn Ibrāhīm Niāsse, affectionately known as Bābā to millions worldwide.

But Bābā's nickname doesn't just reflect his father's legacy; it embodies the inheritance of knowledge, spiritual prowess, and a deep love for the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.

It's a legacy that began with his father, Shaykh al-Islām Ibrāhīm Niāsse, who prayed for his son to carry the torch of prophetic love.

Shaykh Ibrahim's poetry collection, recited during the annual Mawlid, known locally as Gamou, is a blessing beyond words.

It starts with verses composed by his uncle ʿAbbās in praise of the beloved Prophet ﷺ.

These verses reflect the spiritual journey of the Prophet, tracing his lineage through previous Prophets, casting light on his noble birth.

The collection includes poetry from luminaries such as Ḥassān Ibn Thābit, Kaʿb ibn Zuhayr, ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥa, and others who praised the Prophet ﷺ. It even features the timeless Qaṣīdah al-Burdah by Imām al-Buṣayrī.

These poems, known and loved by millions, are recited across borders, from Senegal to America, India, Malaysia, and beyond.

The verses serve as a reminder of the love that binds us to the Prophet ﷺ.

We often wander to distant lands when we think of Qasaid and Mawlid.

But this West African collection can bridge that gap and bring the spirit of Prophetic love to our homes.

NOTE: A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mustafa Briggs for his work and efforts in sharing his experience in Senegal and providing a digital PDF of the poems. May Allah bless him for his efforts.
