Guardians of Revelation

The Unsung Heroes of the Quran’s Compilation

Reading time: 2 minutes

It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder, and it is certainly We Who will preserve it.

Zayd ibn Thabit (RA) wasn’t known for his battlefield skill but for his sharp intellect and deep devotion to the Quran.

When he was too young to join the Battle of Badr, Zayd immediately turned his attention to something that would benefit the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

He started memorizing the Quran and improving his ability to read, write, and understand the revelation.

Zayd's intelligence and enthusiasm led the Prophet to entrust him with learning Hebrew and Syriac.

He also acted as his interpreter when dealing with non-Arabic speakers.

More importantly, Zayd was chosen to record the divine revelations as they were revealed to the Prophet.

This trust, built over years of close service, prepared Zayd for one of the most critical tasks in Islamic history—compiling the Quran after the Prophet’s passing.

In the Battle of Yamamah, many huffaz (those who had memorized the Quran) were martyred.

Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) saw the danger in this loss and approached the Caliph, Abu Bakr (RA), with a suggestion: they needed to gather the Quran into one official manuscript.

At first, Abu Bakr hesitated, unsure if they should take this step since it hadn’t been done during the Prophet’s lifetime.

But recognizing the importance of safeguarding the Quran for future generations, he agreed.

Zayd ibn Thabit (RA) was responsible for this monumental task.

He would later say, "By Allah, if they had ordered me to shift one of the mountains, it would not have been harder for me than what they asked concerning the collection of the Quran."

Zayd’s process was rigorous.

He didn’t rely solely on companions' memories, even though many had memorized the Quran.

Every verse had to be cross-verified with a written copy and the testimony of two reliable witnesses who had heard the verse directly from the Prophet ﷺ.

This level of precision was critical to ensure that the Quran remained intact and unaltered.

However, during this process, Zayd encountered a unique situation.

One verse from Surah Al-Ahzab had only one witness, Khuzaimah ibn Thabit (RA).

According to their standard, two witnesses were required for every verse. But Khuzaimah was no ordinary companion.

In a previous incident, the Prophet ﷺ had declared that Khuzaimah’s testimony was equivalent to that of two men.

This status, given by the Prophet himself, was extraordinary—a divine endorsement of Khuzaimah’s integrity.

Subhanallah, this was no coincidence.

It was as if Allah had prepared this moment long before, ensuring that not even a single verse of the Quran would be left unverified.

Khuzaimah’s testimony allowed the verse to be included in the official manuscript, and this moment stands as a subtle but powerful sign of divine protection over the Quran.

Once Zayd completed his painstaking work, the manuscript—known as the suhur—was handed to Abu Bakr.

Upon his death, it was entrusted to Umar and, after him, to his daughter Hafsah (RA), one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ who had memorized the Quran herself.

Years later, the need for a standardized text arose during the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan (RA).

As Islam spread into new regions, slight variations in recitation began to emerge due to differences in dialect. Fearing that these differences might lead to confusion, Uthman took action.

He retrieved the manuscript from Hafsah and again appointed Zayd to lead a team in producing official copies.

These copies were distributed across the Muslim world, and all other versions were ordered to be burned to prevent further discrepancies.

The meticulous care and precision with which the Quran was compiled are a testament to the dedication of the companions.

Ultimately, this careful process ensured that the Quran we recite today is the same as it was revealed over 1,400 years ago.

It is a living miracle, preserved by human effort and Divine Will.
