Rethinking Food Habits

A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach.

Food has become a subject of convenience rather than necessity.

Industrially produced food has led us away from healthy and fair food practices, especially in America. The preference has turned towards cheaper, nutritionally deficient alternatives.

The meat we consume today is quite different from what our ancestors did. Our grandparents ate livestock that was raised free-range, without hormones or excessive medications.

Today, this is a luxury.

We have inherited an almost semi-vegetarian diet from the Sunnah. The Prophet maintained a humble, minimalistic diet. The Prophet's diet consisted mostly of dates, figs, grapes, milk, honey, olive oil, vinegar, watermelon, barley, pumpkin, squash, and other available vegetables.

Meat was a rare treat rather than the cornerstone of every meal.

Unfortunately, we have strayed from these teachings. This excessive meat consumption is linked to many health issues like gout and diseases like diabetes or heart disease.

The importance of consuming healthy, unprocessed, and locally sourced foods cannot be overemphasized. The alarming rates of cancer and detrimental health ailments are an indication of the urgent shift we must make in our dietary habits.

Consume Halal and Tayyib food that is lawfully permissible, pure, clean, and wholesome.

After all, we are responsible for introducing substantial changes to our food habits to respect our bodies, animals, and environment.

Let's embrace modesty in our consumption, appreciate the nourishing gifts of Allah, and strive to fulfill our responsibilities towards our Creator, ourselves, and the world we live in.

Ameen.
