Polishing the Soul:

Rediscovering Inner Radiance

Reading time: 2 minutes

Your heart is the size of an ocean. Go find yourself in its hidden depths.

Rumi

Our hearts are like crystal vases—pure, radiant, and crafted by the Divine with inherent beauty.

This inner light shines within us, but our hearts can become clouded as we navigate life's journey.

Like a crystal gathering dust, they may accumulate layers of spiritual grime: anger, jealousy, falsehood, and an excessive attachment to worldly desires.

Understanding the State of Our Hearts

Just as a wound left unattended becomes infected, so too can our hearts suffer when neglected.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that when a person sins, a black dot appears on the heart; if the person persists, these dots multiply until the heart becomes hardened.

These blemishes manifest as negative traits: the urge to compete unfairly, the desire to be superior to others, backbiting, and harboring ill feelings.

These are the toxins that pollute our spiritual core.

The Necessity of Purification

Purification of the heart is a fundamental aspect of our faith.

Allah sent the Prophet ﷺ with a triad of missions: to recite His verses, to teach the Book and wisdom, and to purify the souls.

As Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) supplicated in the Quran:

Our Lord! Raise from among them a messenger who will recite to them Your revelations, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. (2:129)

This purification is a continuous process—a journey rather than a destination—that demands commitment, sincerity, and perseverance.

Steps Toward a Purified Heart

Self-Reflection and Recognition

The first step is introspection; we must turn inward and honestly assess ourselves.

What ailments afflict our hearts?

Is it anger that leads us to harm others with our words or actions?

Is it envy that erodes our contentment?

Perhaps it's pride, backbiting, or an unhealthy attachment to material possessions.

Recognizing these issues is crucial, for we cannot heal what we do not acknowledge.

Identifying the Causes

Just as a physician diagnoses the root of an illness, we must identify what triggers our negative traits.

Is it certain company that leads us to gossip? Environments that stir jealousy? Activities that ignite anger?

By pinpointing these catalysts, we can begin to address them effectively.

Removing the Harmful Elements

Once we've identified the sources, we must strive to eliminate them.

This might mean distancing ourselves from toxic relationships, changing our routines, or avoiding situations that stir negative emotions.

If visiting a particular place fills us with envy, perhaps it's wise to limit our visits. If social media breeds discontent, consider a digital detox.

Embracing Beneficial Practices

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, advised us to reduce four things and increase one.

  • Less Talking: By guarding our tongues, we prevent harmful words from affecting others and ourselves. We become more intentional with our thoughts and careful in our interactions.

  • Less Sleeping: Moderation in sleep helps us make better use of our time. Excess sleep can weaken our willpower and foster laziness.

  • Less Eating: Controlling our appetites cultivates discipline and curbs indulgences.

  • Less Socializing: Limiting unnecessary interactions protects us from idle talk and distractions. It helps prevent us from overvaluing worldly possessions and status.

  • More Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr): The remembrance of Allah is the cleanser of the heart—the spiritual soap that polishes the crystal vase. It includes reciting the Quran, engaging in supplication, seeking forgiveness, and reflecting on the wonders of creation. Every moment spent in remembrance draws us closer to Allah and purifies our hearts.

True remembrance allows us to forget ourselves and focus solely on Allah, for how can you think of two when you're contemplating the One and Only?

The Transformation

As we persist in this journey, subtle yet profound changes begin to manifest.

We find ourselves calmer, more patient, and more grateful.

Complaints fade, replaced by contentment with what Allah has decreed.

The material world loses its grip on us; possessions become tools rather than obsessions.

Our hearts soften; tears flow during recitation of the Quran, and we find solace in the stillness of the night prayer.

We connect with others and find a deep joy and presence in each of our moments.
