Omar Ibn Said

The Life of an Enslaved Muslim Scholar

Allah does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad

Omar’s journey began within the rich culture of Futa Toro, an Islamic center in modern-day Senegal. Like many of us, his childhood was steeped in the spiritual rhythm of daily prayers, the educational pursuit of learning the Quran, and a deep connection to his Islamic identity.

During a raid, Omar was captured, desensitized, and transported to the United States, where he was sold into a life of slavery. He found himself in a strange land devoid of the shared chants of the Adhan or the comforting recitation of the Quran.

In the face of adversity and hardship, we often find the heights of human spirit effortlessly thrive. Omar, entrapped within the oppressive machinery of slavery, sought solace where he found it most familiar - in his devotion to Islam. His Islamic faith, like many of ours, presented itself as a fortress shielded from the onslaughts of the harshest realities. Thankfully, this was attentively noted and he was given a Quran. Hence, amidst the tumultuous waves of uncertainty and struggle, Omar’s life was again filled with the soothing rhythm of Quranic verses.

A century onwards, fragments of Omar’s reflections, written during his life of servitude, were compiled. A testament to the stark rawness of Omar’s experiences, his words flowed forth with clarity, resonating with the deep-seated indignation and the humiliating injustice that he endured. It served as a sobering reminder of how situations can take the best of us and reduce us to circumstances unbefitting to any human being.

Each of us has our unique struggles, but it is these very trials that shape us into the people we become. The legacy of Omar ibn Said stands as a testament that no matter our circumstances, our faith, resilience, and human spirit will triumph. Through this cherished belief, we find our peace and solace.

Towards this end, we must strive to nurture our faith much like Omar, and whatever the storm, remember that we are never alone.

Let us make a conscientious effort to live by these principles, engraving them deep within our hearts and inspiring those around us with the same.

Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.

We are calling on the Daily Sunnah Ummah to help us raise $10,000 to provide Ramadan food packages and iftar for orphans, widows, and less privileged in Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, and Uganda.

Every dollar goes towards feeding our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters who continue to be steadfast in their faith despite their current situation.

All contributions are zakat-eligible.

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran, may Allah reward you for your support.
