The Urban Dilemma

Solace in Nature

Indeed, in that are signs for people who reflect.

Did you know that urban living is linked to a surge in various mental health issues?

Startling statistics indicate that urban environments face an almost 40% higher risk of depression, over 20% more anxiety, and double the likelihood of psychiatric disorders. This urban environment also increases feelings of loneliness, isolation, and stress.

With a decrease in nature in all of our environments, these numbers will only increase.

Nature is a therapeutic, nurturing force bestowed upon us by Allah (SWT). Our cherished Prophet Muhammad ﷺ frequently sought solace away from the bustling streets of Mecca, retreating to the Cave Hira for spiritual reflection and rejuvenation.

Recent research has shed light on the benefits of immersing oneself in nature:

❤️ Physical Health Benefits:

  • A decline in mortality rates.

  • Enhanced heart health, marked by reduced cortisol levels and a drop in heart rate.

  • A significant boost to the immune system, especially with an increase in natural killer cells.

🧠 Mental Health Benefits:

  • A notable reduction in stress, as evidenced by decreased cortisol levels.

  • An uplifted mood, fostering mental tranquility.

  • A heightened sense of unity and belonging.

🪞 Reflection:
If sanctuary was needed momentarily from Mecca, what does that mean for the rest of us in our current environment?

Today, take a moment to unplug from technology and take a brief walk in nature. If you do not have access to a park, take 1 minute to appreciate a tree, a plant, or the sky.

How did that feel?
