Media Martyrs & Symbolic Resistance

Not equal are those who remain seated among the believers, except those who possess disabilities, and those who strive and fight in the way of God with their wealth and their persons.

Surah an-Nisaa, 4:95

Great souls are not okay with remaining detached from affairs of great moments.

Despite being excused for his blindness, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (ra) refused to stay among those who remained at home when a campaign was in progress. So, he fixed a role on the battlefield as the banner bearer.

Our media martyrs are our modern counterparts of those heroes written about in our histories. They embody the spirit of courage and resilience. They are the bearers of the Banners of Truth amidst the chaos and brutality of mordern battlefields.

We might not be covering the news on the frontlines or even know what it's like to try and hold onto a banner as one loses limb after limb like Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum (ra).

And yet, we can still honor and support these brave individuals who continue to put themselves in harm's way to ensure that their stories and experiences are heard.

Regardless of where we find ourselves in this global landscape, we all have a role in this resistance.

We can ensure that these stories and experiences continue to reach the ears of the international community and condemn the actions of those who seek to silence the truth.

We can attend the protests.

We can make calls to our representatives.

For some, it might be simply refusing to relinquish symbols of our identity.

For others, it could be the courage to use our given names instead of aliases that are easier to pronounce or less 'foreign' sounding.

These trials we witness bring to light the strength of our Ummah and our love for the sunnah and humanity. We have the strength to continue, irrespective of the hardship. Just as our brothers and sisters embody the spirit of the Sahaba, facing adversity with courage and resilience, so can we follow their example.

We all have a responsibility in this fight. Remember our media martyrs, honor their sacrifice, and strive to emulate their courage in our ways.

Keep going, just as they kept going, holding onto our faith and identity and ensuring that the truth continues to be heard.

May we persist in our symbolic resistance, carrying the banner of truth and peace in our hearts as our media martyrs did on the frontlines.
