The Life of Malcolm X

Redefining Racism

The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.

Like many others from his community, Malcolm X got tangled up in street crime.

From petty thievery to drug use and sale, these early years were spent in the criminal underworld of Detroit and Boston.

This reckless course of life inevitably landed him in prison.

But this is where real change started.

While in prison, Malcolm was introduced to the teachings of the Nation of Islam. This group presented itself as a champion for the oppressed African Americans. They attracted Malcolm with their message of black empowerment.

However, the true transformation happened when Malcolm, after departing from the Nation of Islam, embarked on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. His encounter with the universal brotherhood of Islam, where every believer, irrespective of their race, stood shoulder to shoulder in prayer to one God, brought about an internal shift.

That is when He underwent a spiritual rebirth and took the name Al-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz.

Although he hadn’t learned Arabic or mastered Islamic jurisprudence or theology, his commitment to the faith was undoubting. His faith was based on a humble recognition of the greatness of Allah and His guidance – a lesson for us all.

Faith is not necessarily about an accumulation of religious knowledge or ritualistic observance but rather an earnest belief in Allah and a humble submission to His Guidance.

The last three months of his life were perhaps the most impactful.

His open rejection of racism, his assertive championing of human rights, and his profound commitment to Islam made him an inspiration for thousands across the globe.

Al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz died as a shaheed (martyr), leaving an extraordinary legacy behind.

Al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz is a luminous testament of how a man, from a life of crime and ignorance, can truly alter his path when exposed to the teachings of Islam.

The lessons drawn from the last three months of this remarkable figure remind us - change is possible; it’s never too late to embrace the path of righteousness, and with this belief, we can inspire others around us.

After all, Al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz awakened an Islamic consciousness among millions around the globe despite having only a few months left in his life.

Remember – every act of righteousness has an impact, no matter how big or small. We might not be able to measure our influence, but we must never doubt its existence.

We pray for Allah’s mercy upon our brother Al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz.

May his journey inspire people to embrace the straight path, positively changing this world.
