The Great Tragedy

The Martyrdom of Justice: Retelling the Story of Karbala

"…I am at war with whoever makes war upon you, and at peace with whoever is at peace with you…"
-ﷺ

The eager child sat before his grandfather, similar to how Husayn used to gain wisdom from the Prophet ﷺ, waiting to hear another meaningful tale.
"Stay loyal to the Ahlul Bayt's mission, my child. Be ready to stand alone for justice and unity, like Husayn. Let his eternal flame burn brightly within you, and pass on the Ahlul Bayt's story so their legacy lights our Ummah forever."

Grandfather’s aged eyes glistened as he began, "Let me tell you about Husayn, beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ. His people begged him to lead them against injustice, swearing loyal aid."

Sorrow weighed grandfather's voice, "But when destiny called, those oaths vanished like mist. Noble Husayn stood abandoned yet unshaken, rallying his few loyal friends though opposed by overwhelming numbers."

Grandfather paused, tears welling up, "With dignity, legacy, and the teachings of his beloved Rasul ﷺ intact, Husayn sacrificed his life at Karbala, martyred upholding justice along with his family while others fled. His unwavering stand lights our darkest hour."

The child saw Husayn's brave figure in his mind's eye and wept openly.

Grandfather gently wiped the boy's tears. "We mourn this sacrifice, but Husayn's legacy guides us to virtue. He teaches courage and principle against all odds. His memory must bring our divided Ummah together."

"Learn from Husayn, my child. Let his torch light your way. Keep his memory in your heart, and let it give you strength to stand for what is right, even when abandoned. Honor your oaths, heal divisions, and find hope in adversity. That is how we carry Husayn's eternal flame."

The child met grandfather’s glistening eyes and nodded firmly, overcome with emotion. Little Husayn's candle burned in his heart - a guiding light for his life's journey ahead.

Every aspect of our history is orchestrated for us to learn and use as a crutch to cultivate a life that Allah would be pleased with. On these blessed days of Muharram, we are reminded of the Tragedy of Karbala. While this tragedy cannot be encapsulated by a short story, it is important for us to be seekers of knowledge as Muslims. Through the hope of inspiring the necessary pursuit to learn, this short story serves as an inspiration to seek out our history so that our lives can become a part of a greater legacy.

Sincerely,
