Foundations of Istiqama

Reading Time: 2 min

Truly, it is the heart.

Just like a resilient tree stands firm in the face of a storm, our faith should not waver at the blow of worldly struggles.

However, being resilient and firm requires two integral elements of our faith – internal and external actions. The internal elements encompass elements like belief, the way we perceive Allah, and our individual responses to life's circumstances. On the other hand, external actions primarily focus on the physical tasks we do in worship like prayers, reading the Quran, etc.

A significant saying of the Prophet mentions a lump of flesh in the body which, if set right, will set everything straight.

This lump is our spiritual heart.

Its condition controls our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Thus, maintaining the spiritual heart's purity is the pathway to staying firm on your path and living in sync with your faith.

Our actions are an external embodiment of what we harbor within our hearts.

A corrupted heart will lead to corrupt actions, and a nourished heart will purify our actions. Our 'Istiqama' or our spiritual resiliency lies in finding a balance between the internal and external components of our faith.
