Islam Isn’t About You—And That’s a Good Thing

The Prophet ﷺ loved his Salah more than we can ever imagine.

If he could’ve spent his whole day in prayer, he would have.

But he didn’t.

Why?

Because Islam isn’t about locking yourself in a room and chasing personal bliss.

It’s about something bigger than you.

But today, we live in a me, me, me world.

We want our faith to be like a self-help book, a magic trick to make us feel good.

When it doesn’t, we think something’s wrong.

But here’s the thing: sometimes, faith is hard.

Sometimes, it demands sacrifice.

And that’s okay.

Take Abu Mahjan, a companion of the Prophet ﷺ.

He struggled with alcohol.

A lot.

So much that he had to be tied up to stop drinking.

But when a battle came, he wept because he couldn’t fight alongside his brothers.

He begged to be let go, just for one day.

And when he fought, he fought like a madman.

He returned to his chains after the battle, pretending nothing happened.

But when his master learned the truth, he freed him.

And Abu Mahjan?

He never drank again.

What changed?

His priorities.

His problem wasn’t just about alcohol.

It was about being stuck in his own struggles.

But when he attached himself to a greater cause, everything shifted.

His ego shrank.

His heart softened.

His purpose grew.

And that’s the secret.

If you feel disconnected, if Salah feels empty, if your heart feels hard—it might be because you’re too focused on yourself.

A man once came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained that his heart felt hard.

The Prophet ﷺ advised him: Care for an orphan, feed them, love them—and your heart will soften.

That’s real spirituality.

Not feel-good vibes, but selfless devotion.

This brings us to a concept often overlooked—spiritual narcissism.

It’s when spirituality becomes all about me.

How I feel, how I benefit, and how I grow without considering others.

Islam calls us to serve, not just seek fulfillment.

When you look at the life of the Prophet ﷺ, you see that his greatest moments of joy came from serving others.

He found fulfillment in feeding the hungry, comforting the distressed, and standing up for the oppressed.

He didn’t chase happiness, but it followed him because he was living for a cause far beyond himself.

We often treat spirituality as an escape to make ourselves feel better when life gets tough.

True peace comes when we lose ourselves in the service of others.

When we give without expecting anything in return.

When we show up for our community, even when it’s inconvenient.

When we prioritize our duty to Allah over our desire for comfort.

That’s how you find yourself.

By losing yourself in service.

Reflection

What’s one cause greater than myself that I can attach to?

👶 SunnahStories

A farmer named Yusuf worked all day,
Tending his orchard in the sun’s bright ray.
Among his trees, so fresh and green,
Stood one old olive—dry and lean.

"This tree is useless," Yusuf said,
"It gives no fruit; it might as well be dead!"
With axe in hand, he raised it high,
To cut it down beneath the sky.

But then an elder, wise and kind,
Spoke with truth to change his mind.
"Yusuf, wait! Come sit with me,
And look again—what do you see?"

Beneath the tree, the air was cool,
Its shade was soft, its breeze was full.
A flock of birds sat high above,
Singing songs of peace and love.

A traveler rested near its side,
Thankful for a place to hide.
The old man smiled and said,
"You see? Not all wealth is gold or bread."

"Some give fruit, and some give shade,
Some give joy in the roles they’ve played.
Allah’s wisdom is always best,
And in each thing, His blessings rest."

Yusuf sighed and put down his blade,
"I see the lesson, I am swayed.
Not all value is seen with eyes,
Some are hidden—blessed and wise."

The Prophet ﷺ taught us true,
"The best help others, through and through."
So Yusuf cared for the tree that day,
And learned that wealth comes in many ways.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Why did Yusuf want to cut down the old tree?

  2. What lesson did the wise man teach him?

  3. How did the tree benefit others even though it gave no fruit?

  4. Can you think of something in your life that has hidden blessings?

  5. How can we help others, even in small ways, like the tree?
