Allah Loves Independence
Reading time: 1 minute
It is better for anyone of you to carry a bundle of wood on his back and sell it than to beg of someone whether he gives him or refuses.
The spirit of independence was deeply ingrained in the psyche of our Prophet’s (pbuh) companions.
When a companion dropped something while riding, he preferred to dismount and pick it up himself rather than asking for assistance. They were determined to navigate their lives independently, a value they took seriously.
We are encouraged to seek refuge in Allah from debt and to strive for a life that enables us to remain unencumbered and independent.
Yet, there are narrations extolling the virtues of experiencing poverty and of navigating through these tests, not due to our own doing but as part of our life journey.
These challenges require us to summon our strength, maintain our dignity, and retain our independence as much as possible. This pursuit of self-reliance should never be overshadowed by our circumstances. Even if we find ourselves in trying situations, we’re urged to rise above and not let these conditions shape our mindset.
“Know that the nobility of the believer is his standing up in prayer at night, and his dignity is his not needing people.” (Prophet (pbuh)
Our sense of nobility comes not from worldly accolades but from the time we devote to Allah at night, from seeking honor in His sight.
While we endeavor to be independent, whether financially or emotionally, amidst the supplications we make seeking Allah’s protection from inability, laziness, poverty, and people's cruelty, there might be times when we need assistance. It is important to remember that it is okay to seek help when needed.
Allah does not want us to suffer in silence.
Our request for help should not erode our resolve to stay strong and independent. In all things, we strive to be less dependent on the world and more reliant on Allah. Though we may strive for worldly independence, we are always spiritually dependent upon Him, even if we sometimes forget.
May our journey of self-discovery deepen our resolve for independence, increase our reliance on Allah, and carve within us an unwavering spirit of resilience.
May we always strive for His goodness and strength, independent of all things but Him.
For indeed, we are always dependent on Him. Peace and blessings be upon you all.
