Embracing Hunger

Seven Profound Benefits for the Believer

Reading time: 2 minutes

A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach

In a world overflowing with abundance, where the temptation to indulge is ever-present, we often overlook the subtle yet profound wisdom that lies in restraint—particularly in embracing hunger.

As illuminated by Imam Al-Ghazali, let us journey together to rediscover the seven spiritual treasures that hunger offers.

1. Clarity of Heart and Insight

When we intentionally experience hunger, we cleanse our hearts from the distractions of overindulgence.

Satiation can dull our intellect and blind our hearts, but hunger sharpens our minds and opens our hearts to deeper understanding.

As one saying goes, "Whoever deprives his belly, his thinking is greater, and his heart is perceptive."

By lightening the load on our stomachs, we illuminate the path to wisdom and knock on the very gates of Paradise.

2. Softening of the Heart

Hunger tenderizes our hearts, making us more receptive to the sweetness of conversing with Allah and more affected by His remembrance.

It breaks down the barriers of arrogance and self-sufficiency that often harden our hearts.

As Junayd al-Baghdadi remarked, "One of you will make a barrier between himself and Allah with food and then desire to find the sweetness of conversing with Allah!"

By embracing hunger, we open ourselves to profound spiritual experiences.

3. Humbling the Ego

Nothing tames the ego like hunger.

It removes arrogance and the illusion of self-importance that can distance us from Allah.

Our beloved Prophet ﷺ said, "No. I would rather be hungry one day and satiated another day, for if I am hungry, I am patient and humble; and if I am satiated, I am grateful."

By humbling our egos, we close the gates to heedlessness and open the doors to true contentment and gratitude.

4. Experiencing Tribulation as a Gateway to Paradise

Hunger allows us to taste a semblance of hardship, reminding us of the trials of the Hereafter and increasing our consciousness of Allah's mercy.

This voluntary tribulation fosters empathy and compassion towards those less fortunate, stirring us to feed the hungry and care for the needy.

We align ourselves with the prophetic tradition of mercy and service in feeling hunger.

5. Conquering Desires and Restraining Disobedience

Excess leads to the stirring of various desires that can pull us away from righteousness.

Hunger helps us break these chains, quelling the nafs (ego) and its inclinations toward disobedience.

Dhul-Nun al-Misri wisely said, "I have never been satiated without either disobeying or considering disobedience."

By controlling our appetites, we master our lower selves and draw nearer to Allah.

6. Energizing Worship and Reducing Sleep

A lighter stomach often leads to a lighter body and a more alert mind, making it easier to stand in night prayers and worship.

Overeating can induce lethargy and excessive sleep, robbing us of precious moments that could be spent in remembrance of Allah.

As Abu Sulayman ad-Darani observed, satiation brings heaviness of worship and increased desires.

By embracing hunger, we enhance our devotion and make the most of our time.

7. Embracing Simplicity and Reducing Worldly Burdens

Hunger teaches us contentment and frees us from the relentless pursuit of worldly gains.

When we need less, we are less burdened by the demands of dunya (the worldly life) and more focused on the akhira (the Hereafter).

Ibrahim ibn Adham was once told that certain goods were expensive, to which he replied,

"Cheapen it with abandonment!"

By simplifying our needs, we find freedom and peace.

Practical Steps to Embrace Hunger

You might wonder, "How do we begin to incorporate this practice into our lives, especially when accustomed to abundance?"

The key is gradual reduction.

We can start by slightly decreasing our portions, a little each day until we find contentment with less.

Paying attention to the time, amount, and type of food we consume can make this transition smoother.

May we find in hunger not a void but a space filled with The Divine presence and wisdom.
