Heedlessness

That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.

In the early days of Islam, the Prophet's (pbuh) message was not met with active opposition from most people.

Instead, they did not care enough to inquire or engage with the message.

This indifference was evident in the lack of response from the majority of Meccans to the message of Islam.

Even as the persecution of the early Muslims intensified, with instances of torture and abuse becoming more common, many Meccans continued to maintain their indifference. They viewed these atrocities as part of the normal course of events and did not feel compelled to take a stand.

This indifference became so ingrained in Meccan society that even acts of extreme cruelty, such as the torture of slaves and the persecution of family members, became normalized. People were more concerned with their daily lives, going about their business, attending festivals, and avoiding involvement in the political and social upheaval around them.

History repeats itself.

This year, in particular, the atmosphere feels different.

The uncertainty surrounding the world has shaken us.

Many of us do not feel the same enthusiasm we usually experience as we anticipate Ramadan.

Instead, we are preparing for the unknown, and it’s easy to fall into a state of mind where we feel detached from our spiritual responsibilities.

When our Prophet (pbuh) said that people become “heedless” (indifferent), especially in Sha’ban, It was a call to action.

This Sha’ban could be the most vital one we’ve ever had because of this unprecedented condition.

Why?

Acknowledging indifference and striving against it expands our capacity for worship, deepens our connection to Allah, and strengthens our ties with the Ummah.

To comprehend this indifference, we must distinguish between three primary sins.

  1. Sins from desire draw us towards things that Allah urges us to avoid.

  2. Sins of pride tend to harm others by infringing on the boundaries Allah sets.

  3. Sins of “heedlessness” which linger within a spectrum of indifference.

Often, indifference is simply due to a lack of genuine engagement and inquiry.

And if we pay attention, we might find that indifference seeps into our lives more than we realize.

Unfortunately, sometimes, we only realize the gravity of situations when we’re directly affected.

We cannot afford to be indifferent to the need for spiritual growth.

As we navigate this month where many do not pay attention, let’s tap into this opportunity to combat indifference.

The word ‘Sha’ban’ means ‘to spread and distribute,’ symbolizing the distribution of blessings in this sacred month.

It is time to rekindle the fire within us, to replace indifference with compassion and action.

Just as we feel the sun's warmth spreading over the earth as it rises, Shaban spreads its blessings, preparing us for the month ahead.

Together, we can make this Sha’ban an enlightening journey toward Ramadan—a renewal, reconnection, and rejuvenation period.

Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.

We are calling on the Daily Sunnah Ummah to help us raise $10,000 to provide Ramadan food packages and iftar for orphans, widows, and less privileged in Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, and Uganda.

Every dollar goes towards feeding our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters who continue to be steadfast in their faith despite their current situation.

All contributions are zakat-eligible.

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran, may Allah reward you for your support.
