Hajar

Legacy of Our Black Mother

May Allah bestow His Mercy on the mother of Ishmael! Had she not hastened (to fill her water-skin with water from the Zamzam well). Zamzam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth.

Hājar, a woman of Nubian descent who once endured slavery, became the cherished wife of Prophet Ibrahīm and the mother of Isma'il, peace be upon them.

Her story is a testament to unwavering faith and resilience.

Divine wisdom tested Ibrahīm's gratitude for his long-awaited son, Isma'il, by commanding him to leave Hājar and their infant in a desolate landscape, devoid of human presence or natural resources. As Ibrahīm departed, Hājar's faith in the Almighty's mercy remained steadfast.

Faced with the depletion of their provisions and Isma'il's growing thirst, Hājar's resolve led her to search for aid tirelessly. She traversed seven times between two hills, Safa and Marwa, in a desperate quest for assistance. Her perseverance was rewarded when, by a divine act, a spring of water, known as Zamzam, miraculously emerged near Isma'il. This spring, attributed to the intervention of the Angel Gabriel in some accounts, has since been a source of sustenance for countless pilgrims.

Hājar's story exemplifies the power of relying on the Creator while actively utilizing one's abilities. She demonstrated that the recognition and elevation by the Almighty are based on one's efforts and willingness to act, irrespective of the outcome. Hājar's submission to the Divine Decree and her optimism ensured that her endeavors would be rewarded in this life or the next.

Her narrative serves as a reminder that our value is not solely determined by tangible achievements but by our commitment to our faith and the betterment of our souls. Hājar's legacy continues to inspire, as every Muslim performing the Hajj pilgrimage emulates her journey between Safa and Marwa, reinforcing the importance of reliance on the Almighty and the exertion of one's God-given capabilities.

Hājar's story also resonates with the experiences of countless black individuals throughout history whose contributions and sacrifices have been overlooked or erased due to colonialism and racial discrimination.

Her narrative, preserved by the Creator, highlights the dignity and nobility of a righteous soul devoid of worldly accolades.

In honoring Hājar's legacy, we are reminded to be conscious of the stories of oppressed communities and to ensure that their narratives are not forgotten.

Her enduring faith and perseverance serve as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the profound impact of unwavering trust in the Almighty.

Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.
