Purity is half of iman (faith).
Purification is a bedrock of our faith, embodying both physical cleanliness and the spiritual purity attained through repentance and righteous conduct, which are dearly loved by Allah (SWT).
"Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves." (Quran 2:222)
This quest for purity transcends the mere acts of ritual purification (wudu’) to embrace a meticulous removal of impurities, emphasizing carefulness over haste, for in such diligence, Allah (SWT) finds pleasure in the purity of souls.
Moreover, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in maintaining oral hygiene through the use of the Miswak before each prayer serves as a testament to the comprehensive nature of cleanliness, preparing us for our sacred communions with Allah (SWT).
Though not obligatory, these practices signify the importance of readiness and respect in our approach to divine worship.
Timeliness in our prayers further illustrates our dedication to Allah(SWT), ensuring that our daily tasks do not overshadow these pivotal moments of connection.
Imam Al-Ghazali likens this to the care taken in presenting oneself to a beloved.
The first stage of worship is cleansing the heart of forbidden desires. Thus, our preparations for prayer should mirror our passionate anticipation and reverence to commune with Allah(SWT).
Our commitment to cleanliness also extends to our surroundings, advocating for removing anything potentially displeasing.
This includes mindful avoidance of attending the mosque after consuming strong-smelling foods out of respect not only for fellow worshippers but for the angels among us.
Such attentiveness to creating a harmonious environment reflects our consideration for the seen and unseen.
The emphasis on cleanliness, while seemingly minute, reveals our discipline and mindfulness, urging us to apply the same diligence to our worship.
As we journey towards spiritual refinement, let us embrace purity in all facets of life, acknowledging that our worship hinges upon physical cleanliness, fulfilling a fundamental aspect of our faith.
May Allah(SWT) count us among those who are pure in both body and spirit, and may our efforts in purification signify our earnest longing and preparation to meet Him.
