A man questioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “Do you think that if I perform the obligatory prayers, fast in Ramadhan, treat as lawful that which is halal, and treat as forbidden that which is haram, and do not increase upon that [in voluntary good deeds], then I shall enter Paradise?” He (ﷺ) replied, “Yes.”
Allah (SWT) said:
"I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am. I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. And if he draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length; and if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed" (Sahih al-Bukhari).
In this journey, the Almighty values the quality of our devotion and the consistency of our righteous deeds above isolated acts of grandeur.
It is a testament to the Prophet's (ﷺ) guidance that even the smallest acts of worship, when done regularly and sincerely, are cherished by Allah (SWT) more than sporadic acts of zeal.
A tale of two men helps us visualize this. One of them would sin and then repent, while the other would strive in worship.
The consistent worshipper once saw the sinner in his sin and admonished him.
The sinner replied, "Leave me to my Lord; have you been sent as a watcher over me?"
Later, when the worshipper repeated his admonition,
Allah (SWT) told him, "Who are you to despair of My mercy?"
Ultimately, the sinner, because of his sincere repentance, found favor with Allah (SWT).
This story, while simple, underscores the value of sincerity in repentance and the danger of self-righteousness. It reminds us that our spiritual journey is personal and unique to each individual's relationship with Allah (SWT).
The distinction between Halal (lawful) and Haram (unlawful) extends beyond the legal framework of dos and don'ts.
It is a divine guidance for living a life pleasing to Allah (SWT). It encompasses every aspect of our existence—our actions, thoughts, and behaviors—as a moral compass guiding us toward righteousness.
This way of life aspires not to burden us with rituals but to elevate our character and conduct.
As we tread this path of faith, let us strive to fulfill our obligations sincerely and consistently. Let us adhere to the Halal and renounce the Haram, aligning our moral compass with righteousness.
And let us remember, in every small act of kindness, every sincere prayer, and every moment of patience lies a significant step towards achieving high character and, ultimately, Paradise.
🪞 Reflection:
Reflect on your small, consistent acts of worship.
How can you build on these rather than doing sporadic acts of worship occasionally?
