The Power of Surah Al-Kawthar

From Grief to Gratitude

Reading time: 2 minutes

Indeed, We have granted you abundant goodness

So pray and sacrifice to your Lord ˹alone˺.

Only the one who hates you is truly cut off

Today, I want to discuss one of our favorite surahs, Surah Kawthar, which also happens to be one of the Surahs we tend to recite most often.

Though it is the shortest Surah in the Qur'an, it carries immense meaning and was revealed during one of the most painful moments in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

It was one of the darkest days for our Prophet ﷺ—the day his beloved son passed away.

For those of us who are parents, we understand the depth of love we have for our children.

They bring us hope, joy, and unconditional love that is hard to describe.

The loss of a child is an unimaginable pain, one that only those who have experienced it can fully comprehend.

During this immense grief, the Prophet ﷺ was met with cruelty.

As it happened, his neighbor, Abu Lahab—who was also his uncle—celebrated the death of his son.

At that time, neighborhoods were more like close-knit communities, like sharing a wall in an apartment today.

Imagine hearing someone mocking your loss, laughing as you weep over your child.

To add insult, Abu Lahab went out into the streets, celebrating and shouting that the Prophet’s ﷺ lineage would be cut off.

While the Prophet ﷺ held his lifeless child in his arms, his own family mocked and rejoiced in his loss.

It was one of the most painful moments in his life.

The Alchemy of the Qur'an

But in this moment of unimaginable grief, Allah sent down the beautiful and powerful words of Surah Al-Kawthar.

We know that every word of the Qur’an is divine, but there are moments when the weight of revelation is so profound that even the Prophet ﷺ would emphasize its significance.

In his sorrow, the Prophet ﷺ suddenly looked up with a smile and said, Allah has given me Al-Kawthar.”

Al-Kawthar is described as a river in Paradise, its waters whiter than snow, and a single sip will quench thirst for eternity.

But the meaning of Al-Kawthar extends far beyond that.

The word "Kawthar" conveys an overwhelming abundance.

This abundance isn’t just limited to the Prophet ﷺ—it extends to his Ummah, to us.

The river Al-Kawthar, from which the believers will drink on the Day of Judgment, symbolizes the endless mercy and grace of Allah, given to the Prophet ﷺ and through him, to his followers.

The joy the Prophet ﷺ felt at this moment wasn’t just personal—it was a joy for all of us.

Allah was reminding him, Yes, you’ve experienced a loss, but remember all I have given you.”

At that moment, Allah shifted his focus from what had been taken away to the infinite blessings that remained and were yet to come.

The Qur’an has transformative power.

It can transform grief into gratitude and despair into hope.

When we genuinely connect to it, it can even transform our lower qualities, such as greed and jealousy, into higher states of being.

Just as a smile replaced the Prophet ﷺ’s sorrow, we, too, can find peace and strength in the words of Allah.

Gratitude Through Prayer and Sacrifice

The next verse of Surah Al-Kawthar teaches us how to respond to blessings. “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice.”

Prayer is not just an obligation—it is an expression of gratitude.

When overwhelmed by sorrow or hardship, we may forget the blessings surrounding us.

Through prayer, we reconnect with Allah, realign ourselves with our purpose, shift our perspective, and express gratitude for the gifts He has given us.

The command to sacrifice reminds us that gratitude may require letting go of our desires.

We may think we know what is best for us, but part of being grateful is trusting that what Allah has decreed is far better than anything we could imagine.

Letting Go of the Mockers

Finally, Allah consoles the Prophet ﷺ: Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.”

It is beautiful how Allah reassures His Prophet ﷺ regarding those who mocked him.

Almost mentioned as an afterthought and without even needing to ask, Allah took care of the Prophet’s ﷺ enemies.

Abu Lahab and those who scorned him are now remembered in disgrace, while the name of Muhammad ﷺ is honored and mentioned around the world.

When we encounter people who hurt or mock us, we should not waste our time or energy on them.

Let go of their negativity.

Focus on Allah, focus on pleasing Him, and let everything else fall away.

Allah will take care of the rest.
