From Wounds to Wisdom
End the Cycle
Reading time: 2 minutes
We follow what we found our forefathers practicing.
Would they still do so even if their forefathers had no understanding or guidance?
Generational trauma refers to the transmission of harmful beliefs, behaviors, and habits from one generation to the next.
Often left unquestioned, these patterns shape how we relate to others, raise our children, and connect with Allah (SWT).
As believers, we’re called to ask:
Does this align with what Allah desires for us?
Harmful cycles don’t have to continue.
They can and must stop with us.
The Story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is a powerful example of breaking generational cycles.
Despite facing hostility and abuse from his father—who rejected his message and even tried to harm him—Ibrahim (AS) chose a different path.
His interactions with his children demonstrated love, gentleness, and care.
He ended the cycle of harm and created a legacy of faith.
His story teaches us that no matter what we’ve experienced, we can create a new legacy rooted in faith and mercy.
How Trauma Impacts Us and Our Faith
Trauma doesn’t just affect relationships—it influences how we view ourselves, others, and Allah.
It can create barriers to trust and connection with people and our Creator.
But Islam provides the tools for healing.
Through reflection, dua, and practices like salah, we can regulate our emotions, shift our mindset, and break free from harmful cycles.
A Step Toward Healing
Breaking generational trauma isn’t easy, but it’s possible with courage, self-awareness, and reliance on Allah:
Recognize Patterns: Reflect on the habits or beliefs you’ve inherited. Are they helping or harming?
Seek Healing: Use Islamic guidance, therapy, and tools like mediation to address trauma.
Commit to Change: Nurture love, understanding, and harmony for future generations.
Healing and reflection require intentional pauses.
Slowing down doesn’t come naturally—especially when you excel in many areas of your life.
But creating space for mindfulness is essential.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) regularly sought solitude in the cave of Hira, reflecting deeply and connecting with Allah.
This practice shows us the importance of stepping back, slowing down, and reconnecting to our Creator.
For many, the relationship between a wife and her mother-in-law can be one of the most complex and emotionally charged.
