That’s the story of Joram van Klaveren—a Dutch politician who set out to write an anti-Islam book, only to embrace the faith he once opposed.

A Journey Fueled by Doubts

Joram’s skepticism began early.

He was raised in a religious Christian household and questioned core beliefs like the Trinity.

Despite seeking answers from priests, rabbis, and religious texts, he was unsatisfied.

His doubts deepened, but global events, such as 9/11 and the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, amplified his perception of Islam as a threat.

Fueled by these biases, Joram entered politics with the Freedom Party, driven by a mission to protect his country from what he believed was the danger of Islam.

Determined to prove his convictions, he began writing a book to expose the religion.

An Unexpected Shift

As Joram dove deeper into his research, his worldview began to unravel.

To write convincingly, he compared the Christian concept of God with the Islamic concept of Tawheed (oneness of God).

What he found in the Quran and Islamic teachings resonated deeply.

The simplicity and logic of Tawheed, combined with Jesus’s words in the Bible affirming the oneness of God, began to plant seeds of doubt about his previous beliefs.

In the New Testament, when a man asked Jesus about the most important thing in life and how to gain paradise, Jesus replied, “There are two things: Your God is One and treat your neighbor as you want to be treated yourself.”

He contacted prominent Islamic scholars, including Sheikh Abdul Hakim Murad to find something for his book.

Instead of finding fuel for his anti-Islam stance, he received thoughtful, logical responses.

The guidance to study Islam from authentic Muslim sources opened a new world to him.

Slowly, the negative stereotypes he held crumbled as he encountered the beauty and depth of Islamic teachings.

The Prophet's (ﷺ) Character: A Turning Point

Joram still struggled with his perception of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), but this changed when he read Martin Lings’ The Life of the Prophet. 

He no longer saw the Prophet as a warlord but as a father, friend, and teacher.

One story struck him deeply—the forgiveness of Hind bint Utbah, who had orchestrated the killing of the Prophet’s beloved uncle, Hamza (RA).

Despite her actions, the Prophet (ﷺ) forgave her, demonstrating unparalleled mercy.

This act of forgiveness, Joram realized, was not the behavior of an ordinary man.

It solidified his growing conviction that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was indeed a prophet of Allah.

The Quran Speaks to the Heart

While wrestling with the idea of accepting Islam, Joram put his books away, overwhelmed by the weight of his discoveries.

The books suddenly fell from the shelf.

As he picked up the Quran, his hand fell on a specific verse.

“It is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts.”

At that moment, he felt as though Allah was speaking to him directly, more powerfully than ever before.

This verse pierced through his lingering doubts.

He realized that his intellect was not holding him back but his ego.

He prayed sincerely for guidance, asking God to clarify the truth.

When he woke up the following day, his heart was at peace.

The anxiety and resistance he had felt disappeared, replaced by certainty.

A Lesson in Transformation

Joram van Klaveren’s journey from staunch opposition to Islam to wholeheartedly embracing it is a profound reminder of the transformative power of truth, humility, and sincerity.

His story shows that even the deepest biases can be overcome when the heart and mind remain open to seeking knowledge and understanding.

This desire to share Islam's beauty and clear misconceptions inspired Joram to found the Islamic Experience Center (IXC).
