Three Paths to Divine Friendship

Drawing Closer to God

Reading time: 2 minutes

Allah has said:

‘Whosoever shows enmity to a wali (friend) of Mine, then I have declared war against him.

And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him

In every human soul resides a deep yearning—a longing not just to believe in God, but to draw near to Him as a cherished friend.

Let's delve into three transformative paths to becoming friends with God and explore the unique benefits that each path bestows upon the seeker.

1. The Sweetness of Consistent Devotion

The first path beckons through an unwavering commitment to God's commands, transforming obligatory duties into sources of genuine joy.

Begin by approaching your daily prayers, fasting, and other obligations not as burdens but as cherished opportunities to connect with the Divine. When performed sincerely, these acts soften the heart and draw you nearer to God.

As the sweetness of obligatory deeds permeates your soul, you'll naturally yearn for more. Engaging in voluntary acts—extra prayers, additional fasting, acts of charity—becomes a labor of love, fueled by a deep longing for God rather than mere obligation.

There was once a humble slave during a time of severe drought. While the community gathered openly to plead for rain, this man stood quietly in the corner of the marketplace. Overheard by a scholar, he raised his hands and implored, "O Allah, I ask You by the love You have for me, let the rain fall."

The scholar was taken aback—how could this unknown man presume such closeness to God?

Yet, no sooner had the slave lowered his hands than the skies opened up, and rain poured abundantly.

2. The Transformative Power of Sincere Repentance

The second path unfolds when one turns back to God with genuine remorse, allowing divine love to replace the fleeting pleasures of wrongdoing.

The journey begins with an honest self-assessment. Recognize and admit your mistakes without excuse or justification.

This humility opens the door to transformation.

Seek God's forgiveness with a sincere heart and a true intention to change.

Genuine repentance erases past sins and purifies the heart, making it receptive to divine grace.

In the time of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), a severe drought afflicted his community. Despite collective prayers, no relief came.

God revealed to Moses that among them was a sinner whose actions had withheld the rain.

Moses announced this, urging the individual to step forward.

Hidden in the crowd, the sinner was overwhelmed—not by fear of exposure but by the realization that God loved him enough to send a message prompting his return.

With a heart heavy with remorse, he privately turned to God, saying, "O Lord, You have kept my sins concealed all this time. I repent to You sincerely; forgive me." Instantly, the rain began to fall.

When Moses inquired why the rain had come despite no one confessing,

God replied, "O Moses, I withheld the rain because of him, and now I have bestowed it because of him. Out of My love for him, I concealed his sin even in his repentance."

God's withholding of rain was not merely a punishment but a loving call for the sinner to return.

3. Patience and Trust Amidst Trials

The third path is illuminated by enduring life's hardships with patience, viewing trials as gateways to a closer relationship with God.

Understand that challenges are not divine punishments but opportunities for spiritual growth.

Each trial is a chance to deepen your reliance on God and purify your soul.

Believe that every hardship carries a purpose and that God guides you toward what is ultimately best.

Reflect upon the life of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), one of God's closest friends.

His trials were immense and unfathomable: from being cast into a raging fire by his people to the heart-wrenching command to sacrifice his beloved son.

Each test was a means to purify his heart from all attachments except God.

His life teaches us that enduring trials with faith can lead to an unparalleled closeness with the Divine.

The Interconnected Journey

These paths are not mutually exclusive; they often intertwine.

Engaging in good deeds leads to a heightened sense of vigilance and a propensity to seek repentance.

If we neglect our obligations, feelings of guilt may surface, guiding us back through sincere repentance to the path of righteousness.

However, if one persists in negligence, the heart becomes desensitized.

God may, out of His mercy, take away something we hold dear.

This loss serves as a wake-up call, reminding us of the temporary nature of this world and prompting us to reassess our attachments.

Sometimes, without taking anything away, God allows us to realize the emptiness of what we once thought fulfilling, gently nudging us back toward Him.

Final Reflections

Becoming a friend of God is a transformative journey accessible to every soul. Each path leads to unique and profound benefits.

The rewards are as varied as the paths:

  • For the devoted worshipper, an unshakable inner peace and joy that worldly successes cannot provide.

  • For the one who repents, a renewed purpose and clarity that redefines one's entire existence.

  • For the patient sufferer, a deep trust in God's plan brings contentment and wisdom beyond worldly understanding.

Let us strive to walk these paths with open hearts, embracing the unparalleled benefits of divine friendship.

In doing so, we transform our lives and become beacons of mercy and guidance for those around us.
