Forgiveness should be one of the first things we ask for during Ramadan.

Why?

Without it, everything else, including our goals, habits, and hopes, is just a shiny layer over a broken foundation.

We set intentions for self-improvement, but what’s the point if we don’t clear our slate with Allah first?

This clear slate will help us solidify our new routines and identities.

It encourages introspection and growth by allowing us to learn from our mistakes without feeling trapped by them.

Remember, Allah’s mercy is beyond our comprehension.

But here’s a glimpse from the words of the Prophet ﷺ:

A group of prisoners was brought before him, and among them was a frantic mother searching for her child.

When she finally found him, she grabbed him, held him close, and wept as she nursed him, overwhelmed with relief.

The Prophet ﷺ turned to his companions and asked, "Do you think this woman would ever throw her child into the fire?"

They responded, "By Allah, never!"

Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah is more kind to His slave than this woman is to her baby."

And here’s the key: You don’t need perfect words or the deepest emotions at first.

Just start.

Show up.

If you don’t fully feel it yet, that’s okay.

Get into the habit of reflecting and asking.

Begin with the actions, express your regret, and mix it with gratitude for all Allah has given you.

And don’t fall into the trap of thinking you must earn forgiveness.

The moment you ask, Allah has already forgiven you.

Doubting Allah’s forgiveness is a bigger sin than whatever we’re seeking forgiveness for.

Allah calls us back to Him always.

So why would He turn away anyone who turns toward Him?

Know that even your desire to ask is from Allah.

Some scholars say that the very act of raising your hands in du’a is proof that your du’a has already been accepted.

So don’t hesitate.

Ask, and know that Allah’s mercy is already embracing you.

Reflect on this:

  1. What are some sins or mistakes you’re holding onto?

  2. Do you ever feel hesitant to ask Allah for forgiveness? Why do you think that is?

  3. If you truly believed Allah had wiped your slate clean, how would that change the way you move forward?

👶 SunnahStories:

With morning light so fresh and bright,

Amina walked with steps so light.

Upon her head, a jug she bore,

With dreams of wealth and plans galore.

"I’ll sell this milk and buy some eggs,

Then chickens hatch on straw-lined beds.

I’ll sell the hens and buy a goat,

Whose milk will fill a silver boat!"

"The goat will bring me riches great,

And soon a cow will be my fate!"

"Then all will see how grand I stand,"

"With lifted head and proud command!"

She raised her chin with joyful glee,

And down the jug fell—spilling free!

The milk, her dreams, all washed away,

And sadness filled her heart that day.

An old woman with voice so kind,

Said, "Trust in Allah, peace you’ll find."

"For He who gives and He who takes,

Knows what is best in all He makes."

Amina sighed, but then she knew,

That patience makes success come true.

With steady hands, she worked once more,

And trusted Allah to bless her store.

Reflection Questions:

1️⃣ What mistake did Amina make while carrying the milk?

2️⃣ Why did the milk spill, and what did she learn from it?

3️⃣ What does Islam teach us about balancing hard work and trust in Allah?

4️⃣ Can you think of a time when you focused too much on the future and forgot the present?

5️⃣ How can we remind ourselves to be grateful for what we have?
