A Feast of Faith
Stories of Humility and Pride
Reading time: 2 minutes
And whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for them,
And provide for them from sources they could never imagine.
As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions dug the trench around Madinah, preparing for the impending battle against the Confederated tribes, exhaustion set in.
Days of hard labor and scarce provisions had taken their toll.
But the Prophet ﷺ was there alongside his companions, digging, moving stones, and sharing in their fatigue and hunger.
They were all in this together.
One day, as the Prophet ﷺ lifted his hands to dig, his garment shifted, and Jabir ibn Abdillah (RA) caught sight of something startling—a large rock tied to the Prophet’s ﷺ stomach.
This was a trick used in those days to alleviate hunger pains.
The idea was that pressing the stomach with a rock could ease the gnawing sensation that came from an empty stomach.
The sight crushed Jabir (RA).
He could not bear to see the Prophet ﷺ suffering.
Quietly, he slipped away and hurried home, hoping to find something, anything, to prepare a meal for the Prophet ﷺ.
He approached his wife and shared his distress, saying, “I saw something today I cannot accept.”
She looked around their modest home.
They had very little: a loaf of bread and a young goat, hardly enough for a feast.
But they didn’t hesitate.
Jabir’s (RA) wife quickly set about preparing the little they had, and Jabir (RA) himself went to sacrifice the goat.
It was all the food they owned.
Once everything was ready, Jabir (RA) returned to the Prophet ﷺ and quietly said, “Ya Rasulullah, my wife has prepared some food. Perhaps you and one or two people could come and join us?”
The Prophet ﷺ stood up and called out to the entire camp, “O people of the trench! Jabir and his wife have prepared a meal for us! All of you, come and eat!”
Jabir’s (RA) heart dropped.
All of them?
He rushed back home, his mind racing.
He asked his wife, “What are we going to do now? The Prophet ﷺ has invited everyone!”
She asked him calmly, “Did you invite them, or did the Prophet ﷺ?”
Jabir (RA) responded, “It was the Prophet ﷺ.”
She smiled and replied, “Then don’t worry. If he invited them, there will be enough.”
When the Prophet ﷺ arrived at their home, he made dua over the food.
He then spat lightly into the pot.
The Prophet ﷺ instructed Jabir (RA) to keep the pot on the stove and not to lift it until everyone had eaten.
Groups of ten men entered the house one by one, ate their fill, and left.
As each group finished, another would come in.
They all ate to their hearts’ content. Jabir (RA) and his wife watched in amazement, marveling at how the small meal continued to satisfy person after person.
The flow continued, with each group eating as much as they wished, leaving no sign of depletion in the pot.
Finally, when everyone had eaten, Jabir (RA) and his wife just sat there, awestruck.
Jabir (RA) later mentioned that around a thousand people came and ate at his house that day.
Through an act of deep love and sacrifice, Jabir (RA) and his wife witnessed a miracle.
The experience served as a reminder of how blessings are multiplied in unexpected ways when given with sincerity.
In moments of scarcity, it is easy to forget the infinite abundance that Allah can bestow.
But here, in the house of a humble couple, the boundaries of the material world dissolved, replaced by the boundless generosity of the Divine.
All it took was faith to give, even when they had little.
Reflection:
In moments of worry or scarcity, how can we find strength through faith, like Jabir (RA) and his wife did?
